# Azealia Banks "Are You Ready To Die?"

On September 5, 2021, rapper Azealia Banks posted an Instagram Story with white text on a black background reading "are you ready to die claire?" aimed at musician Grimes, whose real name is Claire Boucher. Screenshots were turned into an exploitable template where the name is replaced with other celebrities, politicians or current-event targets, with 2023 Twitter edits about the Supreme Court and OceanGate submarine reaching tens of thousands of likes.

## Origin
On September 5, 2021, Azealia Banks posted a run of Instagram Stories, one of which was a black square overlaid with the white caption "are you ready to die claire?"[1] The "claire" was Grimes, born Claire Boucher, whom Banks had publicly feuded with over Grimes's relationship with Elon Musk. A fan forum thread on GaGaDaily archived the screenshot the same day[1].

On September 6, 2021, a Redditor posted screenshots of several of Banks's other Stories to /r/playboicarti, including one reading "are you ready to die Brad Pitt?" The thread, captioned "Bro what is going on in this chick head," reached over 2,500 upvotes[4].

- **Creator:** Azealia Banks
- **Date:** 2021

## Overview
The format's appeal is its stripped-down look: white sans-serif text on solid black, lowercase phrasing, no caption needed beyond the name being threatened. Anyone can recreate it in a text editor in under a minute, which helped edits spread faster than typical photoshop templates[3]. Common targets include public figures Banks has not actually feuded with, so the comedy comes from the absurd death threat landing on someone unrelated.

By 2023, people were applying the template to anything bad happening to a disliked person, object or institution. One widely shared Twitter edit directed the question at the Supreme Court after an affirmative action ruling[5], while another aimed it at the OceanGate submarine during the Titan incident, posing the question to an inert vehicle[6]. Banks herself later posted a similar Story about Brad Pitt, giving the joke a canonical sequel documented in a /r/playboicarti screenshot thread[4].

## How to Use
A typical edit keeps the exact Story layout: white sans-serif text on a solid black background, lowercase "are you ready to die," then whatever name or noun fits the news cycle, ending with a question mark. Users often attach it as an image reply on Twitter to posts about a disliked target, letting the Banks association do the comedic work without needing added caption text[3].
