Bad Syndrome
Published October 24, 2026
Bad Syndrome, also known as Instead of Brain There Is a Dark Orb, started as a fake Wikipedia screenshot posted by Twitter user @speshfresh on October 30, 20181. The surreal joke listed the entire definition as a single sentence next to a diagram of a skull with a solid black circle inside. By October 2020, Tumblr remixers were renaming the condition and putting wizards in the skull3.
Overview
Bad Syndrome edits keep the mock Wikipedia layout intact. Posters change only the condition title at the top of the article and the single body sentence, matching the deadpan one-line definition style of the original5. The humor comes from the gap between the straight encyclopedia layout and the absurd anatomy diagram underneath, so edits work best when the inserted character or object clashes with the serious medical presentation.
Specific variations have placed Hatsune Miku inside the skull2 and a wizard rebranded as 'good and cool syndrome'3. Other edits break the frame entirely: in September 2022, Redditor u/Snailtan posted a recursive version where the body text looped back on itself with 'instead of brain there is a instead of brain there is a...'9, turning the one-line gag into infinite regress.
