Overview

Billy It's Time You Learn About Money, also called Billy… Wait, is a webcomic template built around a punchline the artist never drew1. The setup shows a father figure sitting Billy down for a serious talk about money, then cuts off mid-sentence, leaving the fourth panel blank for anyone to fill in with their own twist2. That empty panel is the whole joke, since it invites edits that swap out the money lesson for anything from anime bits to dark humor to shitpost non-sequiturs3.

The format is instantly recognizable: a two-character comic where an older figure begins an earnest speech and Billy sits waiting for the wisdom, only for the reveal panel to derail into absurdity1. Because the original artist put out the blank comic as a public challenge rather than a finished work, the meme was designed from the start to be remixed2.

Webcomic artist SrGrafo drew the unfinished comic Billy… Wait and posted it on March 1, 2019, offering it as raw material for a meme contest1. Redditor degroob ran the contest thread, titled Meme Challenge 5: Billy… wait, which pulled more than 1,300 upvotes in its first four days2. SrGrafo never released his own finished version of the comic, and by March 5, 2019, no winner had been announced3.

How It Spread

Contest submissions started piling up in the original thread within hours, with users like TheRealtorGuy and X-pertNinja posting early edits directly as replies2. From there the template jumped subreddits fast, showing up across /r/dankmemes and /r/animemes as people wrote their own punchlines for the blank fourth panel3.

The biggest single hit came on March 2, 2019, when Redditor thezucceningx posted a version titled Billy, you cunt to /r/dankmemes and pulled in over 16,700 upvotes in three days4. That post locked in the template's core rhythm: heartfelt setup, immediate tonal collapse. SrGrafo kept drawing comics with Billy afterward, but the wait template is still the one people redraw3.

How to Use This Meme

Making a Billy It's Time You Learn About Money edit typically means keeping the first three panels intact and filling the blank final panel with whatever punchline you want1. The common convention is a hard tonal shift, since the serious money-talk setup lands hardest when the payoff is absurd, crude, or completely off-topic3.
