# Black and Pink Meme Houses

Two neighboring beach houses on Palisades Beach Road in Santa Monica, one painted jet black and the other a pink and purple sherbet scheme, became a comparison meme after a September 2015 Reddit post labeled them 'Voldemort and Barbie.' An August 2018 tweet joking about the 'sexual tension' between the properties went viral with over 79,000 likes, setting off years of object-labeling edits. By 2020, Reddit edits set the houses against Pumped Up Kicks lyrics and Kingdom Hearts storytelling critiques.

## Origin
The two houses sit at 1341 Palisades Beach Road in Santa Monica, California, and are nicknamed the Sherbet Homes for their contrasting colors, with Zillow valuing the pink and purple property at roughly $6 million[8]. Redditor u/zenaidnog90 posted the earliest well-circulated photograph of the pair to r/pics on September 7th, 2015, under the caption 'Voldemort and Barbie are neighbors!,' earning more than 11,400 upvotes[1]. That caption set the comparison template later edits would reuse, casting the black house as the villain side and the pink house as the doll-pretty side.

## Overview
Posters crop the two homes side by side and give each one a contrasting label, with the black house taking the darker, edgier, or more chaotic half of a comparison and the pink and purple house claiming the softer or sweeter side[1]. Common edits set a song's lyrics against its upbeat melody[5], a film's grim plot against its colorful character designs[4], or two sides of a single personality. The visual contrast reads at a glance because the two properties sit wall to wall on Palisades Beach Road, so no photoshop is needed to produce the split[8].

Fan edits range from plain two-panel labels to heavier photoshop work, including one post that dropped the houses into the Piper Perri Surrounded template with pink buildings boxing in the lone black structure[3]. A separate thread anthropomorphizes the properties as a couple, with captions imagining the design arguments they must have as neighbors[6]. The tone sits closer to affectionate ribbing than mockery, since both homes are expensive beachfront properties and part of the joke is that the owners committed to opposite aesthetic extremes[7].

## How to Use
A standard edit places the side-by-side photograph of the two homes into a two-panel image macro and attaches one label to each house. The black house typically takes the darker, meaner, or edgier element of the comparison, while the pink house takes the brighter, softer, or more innocent element. Captions often work for song lyric versus melody splits, media plot versus visuals, or two moods inside the same person.
