# Blexas
Blexas is political slang mashing "blue" and "Texas" that Democrats use for the dream of flipping the state to their party. The word first appeared in print in a January 2024 U.S. News article and exploded during the November 2026 midterms, after Gina Hinojosa unseated Governor Greg Abbott and James Talarico defeated Ken Paxton for the U.S. Senate. By November 4, 2026, Blexas posts on X were clearing a million views within hours.
## Origin
The portmanteau joins "blue" and "Texas" to picture the state governed by Democrats, playing on the color coding of U.S. political maps. Its earliest known print usage sits in a U.S. News article titled "Population-Growth Patterns Paint Grim Picture for Democrats," published on January 16, 2024[4]. Before that article, the word circulated informally in progressive commentary whenever competitive Texas races came up during election cycles.
Blexas gained real currency during the 2026 U.S. midterm elections. Democrat Gina Hinojosa defeated incumbent Republican Greg Abbott in the governor's race, becoming the first Hispanic governor of Texas and its first Democratic governor since 1990[1]. In the same cycle, Texas State Representative James Talarico beat Republican Ken Paxton for the U.S. Senate, giving the state its first Democratic senator since 1988[1].

## Overview
Posts generally pair a celebratory caption with photos, videos or screenshots about Texas politics or Lone Star State stereotypes flipped on their head. One widely reshared X joke during the 2026 midterms read "IM SHAKING SO HARD MY GOVERNOR'S A WOMAN MY SENATOR'S A FREAK MY TEXAS IS BLUE AND MY WHISKY IS NEAT," mixing rhyming bravado with Democratic celebration[1]. Others riff on country music, suggesting that a blue Texas would mean Spotify auto playing Kacey Musgraves over Morgan Wallen[1].
Tone ranges from giddy to absurd. WNBA fans tied Dallas Wings rookies Paige Bueckers and Azzi Fudd to the color swap with the caption "texas saw how good these two looked in blue so they decided to flip the state"[1]. Across X, users layered Blexas onto jokes about changing voter demographics and suburban swings in the state[4].
## How to Use
Posts typically tag a Texas political image, campaign photo, or piece of in state culture with a punchline about the state turning Democratic. Common conventions include rhyming boasts about the new Hinojosa and Talarico wins, country music swaps (Kacey Musgraves replacing Morgan Wallen), and WNBA tie ins with the Dallas Wings[1]. Users often lowercase the caption for an exhausted or giddy delivery.
