# Buzz Lightyear In A Suit Buzz Lightyear In A Suit is a 2020 image macro built on digital artist halawany's "RealToons" portrait of the Toy Story character in a purple suit. It went viral in September 2020 after a tweet jokingly warned that "racists and homophobics" were using the picture as a profile avatar to find each other, prompting users to adopt it en masse and play along in ironic worry. By May 2022, /r/shitposting revived the bit with Buzz avatars flooding Reddit comment sections. ## Origin On May 16th, 2020, digital artist halawany published the Buzz Lightyear portrait on Instagram as part of their "RealToons" series, which rendered animated characters as human photographs[2]. The piece was also hosted on halawany's Behance portfolio under the same project name[1]. By June 5th, 2020, Redditor wubbalubba7 had circulated the image on /r/MemeEconomy, flagging it as a profile-picture gimmick with early investment potential[6]. The meme format itself arrived on September 19th, 2020, when Twitter user @ryderlesiw captioned the picture, "WARNING ⚠️ Racists and Homophobics have been using this picture as their profile pics to get in touch with each other, be safe"[4]. The tweet collected around 270 likes and set up the ironic warning template that later waves of posters would copy[3]. - **Platform:** Instagram / Twitter (viral spread) - **Creator:** halawany (artwork); @ryderlesiw (meme format) - **Date:** 2020 ## Overview The picture shows a photorealistic human version of Buzz Lightyear grinning for the camera in a purple suit and matching dress shirt, posed like a prom portrait[1]. Posts work through beetlejuicing: once the "warning" tweet about racist and homophobic users circulates, people switch their own avatars to the Buzz portrait and reply underneath playing worried, with lines like "Thanks for the heads-up" or feigned shock that any such group exists[3]. The payoff lands because the thread fills up with identical dapper Buzz icons all performing concern, which turns the warning into its own punchline[7]. Posters treat the ironic alert itself as the template, so the humor sits in the mismatch between a serious caption and a comment column of grinning cartoon captains[9]. ## How It Spread @ryderlesiw reposted the tweet to TikTok the same day as a green-screen video, where it collected roughly 1.7 million plays and 316,800 likes over about 18 months[5]. iFunny user Scucc re-uploaded the TikTok to iFunny in late September 2020, and multiple commenters changed their avatars to the Buzz portrait while posting mock-concerned replies[7]. iFunnier DaddyNeedsABagel compiled the beetlejuicing into a video on September 26th, 2020, which earned about 4,600 smiles[8]. The compilation was rehosted on Instagram going into 2021, keeping the bit alive outside iFunny[2]. The joke returned in May 2022 after /r/shitposting user Rxyor25 posted the image on May 4th with the caption "please stay safe out there guys," collecting roughly 8,800 upvotes in eight days[9]. Comment sections filled with Buzz Lightyear profiles repeating the 2020 iFunny performance, and Redditor Aight_brother recorded the thread for /r/cursed_videomemes, where the clip gathered about 2,700 upvotes[10]. ## Frequently Asked Questions ### What is Buzz Lightyear In A Suit?
