# City Boy! City Boy! A clip of Deputy Durland from the 2012 Gravity Falls episode "Headhunters" mockingly shouting "City boy! City boy!" at Dipper went viral on TikTok in June 2022, where users paired it with scenarios of men acting dismissively toward women. In January 2026, the format saw a second life on TikTok with new edits racking up hundreds of thousands of likes. ## Origin The source clip is from "Headhunters," the third episode of Gravity Falls season one, which aired on the Disney Channel on June 30th, 2012[3]. In the scene, Deputy Durland dismisses the idea that Dipper, a kid visiting from the city, could help solve a case, and jeeringly chants "City boy! City boy!" at him. A standalone upload of the moment went to YouTube on July 12th, 2016, where it collected over 147,000 views before being adopted as a reaction[6]. The meme format itself began nearly a decade later. In June 2022, TikTok users started stitching the Durland chant onto clips of men acting coldly or dismissively toward women, pulling on the AAVE slang meaning of "city boy"[2]. One early example from TikToker @thaboyzbible on June 20th, 2022, used the Gravity Falls cutaway after a man refuses to give a woman his Snapchat and reached over 7.1 million views in five days before being deleted[1]. - **Platform:** Disney Channel (source), TikTok (viral spread) - **Creator:** Unknown - **Date:** 2012 ## Overview The clip itself runs only a few seconds: Deputy Durland, a bumbling cop from Gravity Falls, points at protagonist Dipper and taunts him with the repeated shout "City boy! City boy!"[3]. On TikTok, creators splice this cutaway onto the end of a different setup, almost always footage of a man dismissing, ignoring or antagonizing a woman[1]. The joke works as an exclamation point: the Durland yell plays as approval of the "city boy" behavior that just happened on screen. The label leans on an AAVE slang usage of "city boy" that predates the TikTok edit, defined on Urban Dictionary in July 2019 as a man "chasing the bag" without letting women derail him[2]. The Instagram page cityboys, with over 1.2 million followers, had been posting content around that same ethos before the Gravity Falls clip got attached to it[4]. Pairing a children's Disney Channel cartoon with that specific slang is most of the humor. Typical posts are short, under 15 seconds, and lift source footage from reality TV, street interviews, dating podcasts or screenshots of tweets about relationship drama. The Durland cut hits right after the moment of refusal or clapback. Comment sections often extend the bit with altered stills of Durland's face[5]. ## How It Spread Through late June 2022, the format moved quickly across TikTok. On June 26th, the account @cityboyyyyycityboyyy posted a version attached to a tweet about a boyfriend caught cheating on his girlfriend's birthday who defended himself by claiming he didn't know it was her birthday, and the video drew over 533,500 likes[7]. Two days later, TikToker @ryanwmpugh posted a meta commentary noting the Durland clip had taken over his For You Page, picking up more than 10,400 likes[8]. After cooling off for several years, the format came back on TikTok in early January 2026. On January 7th, 2026, @reelrushclips_ shared a car-argument edit that got nearly 14,000 likes in five days[9]. On January 8th, @ryanwmpugh posted a follow-up to his 2022 video pointing out that the same meme was going around four years later, and that post hit over 292,500 likes[10]. The revival kept rolling that week. TikToker @joelohrenz posted his own "it's happening again" video on January 10th that drew over 173,000 likes[11], and on January 11th, @dr.smeckles's edit, built around a man telling a woman to stop taking photos on his bike after she turned down his selfie request, cleared 408,700 likes in a single day[12]. Know Your Meme logged the format's second wave as a notable resurgence tied to this January 2026 cluster[1]. ## Frequently Asked Questions ### What is City Boy! City Boy!?
