# Emma Stone Smiling (Bugonia) Emma Stone Smiling (Bugonia) is a reaction GIF pulled from Yorgos Lanthimos' 2025 film, showing Stone's character Michelle Fuller flipping from a tight-lipped frown to a wide, strained smile. After a Tenor upload in December 2025, Facebook and X posts in late January 2026 turned the clip into the go-to reaction for faking joy over mildly dreadful situations. ## Origin Yorgos Lanthimos' film Bugonia opened on October 31, 2025, with Emma Stone playing Michelle Fuller, a pharmaceutical executive kidnapped by a man convinced she's an alien who shaves her head to cut off contact with her home planet[5]. In the referenced scene, her captor says, "99.9 percent of what's called activism is really personal exhibitionism and brand maintenance in disguise," and Fuller offers a small, careful smile so as not to set him off[3]. Tenor user tiredteaistired uploaded a GIF of the moment on December 8, 2025[1], while a subtitled screenshot carrying the activism line spread on Instagram[2] and the r/yorgoslanthimos subreddit the same month[3]. The meme format itself emerged on January 26, 2026, when Facebook page Laughlifegoals posted both frames under the caption "When the last step of a recipe is 'Enjoy,'" which pulled in over 1,400 reactions over the following months[4]. - **Platform:** Film still / Facebook (meme format) - **Creator:** Laughlifegoals (earliest known meme post) - **Date:** 2025 ## Overview The clip zooms on Michelle Fuller's face as she shifts from a flat frown into a wide, closed-mouth smile in the span of about a second[1]. The smile reads as nervous appeasement rather than real happiness, which is what gives the format its edge: it works as a reaction to anything a person has to pretend to be pleased about[5]. Posters pair it either as a two-image macro (frown then smile) or as the Tenor GIF, with a one-line setup describing a mildly dreadful or absurd realization[8]. The format sits in the same lane as polite-horror reactions, with the Lanthimos aesthetic adding a layer of unease. ## Frequently Asked Questions ### What is Emma Stone Smiling (Bugonia)?
