# Ervil LeBaron Ervil LeBaron was a Mormon fundamentalist cult leader who ordered rival killings from 1974 until his 1981 death in prison, and in March 2024 his name went viral on TikTok as a soundalike for 'Evil LeBron' James. A joke post by @jbisnotontiktok1 collided with the ongoing LeBonBon and Leevil James edit trend set to 'You Are My Sunshine,' and by late March, basketball edits were tagging LeBron with the dead cult leader's name. ## Origin The historical Ervil LeBaron led the Church of the First Born of the Lamb of God in San Diego starting in 1972, and was convicted of killing his brother the same year before the conviction was overturned[1]. He was sentenced to life in prison in 1980 after ordering the 1977 murder of rival Mormon leader Rulon Allred, and died behind bars in 1981[1]. In January 2024, Hulu released 'Daughters of the Cult,' a docuseries about his daughters and the hit list murders carried out by his followers[7]. The meme form arrived on March 16, 2024, when TikTok account @jbisnotontiktok1 posted a short clip pointing out that 'Ervil LeBaron' sounded like 'Evil LeBron,' collecting over 87,000 likes within ten days[2]. - **Platform:** TikTok (origin) / Twitter (viral spread) - **Creator:** @jbisnotontiktok1 - **Date:** 2024 ## Overview Posts follow a consistent template: a basketball highlight reel or player edit of LeBron James runs under 'You Are My Sunshine,' with captions or text overlays calling him 'Ervil LeBaron' instead of LeBron[4]. Some creators extend the bit with fake documentary voiceovers claiming an 'evil LeBron' named Ervil LeBaron orchestrated crimes from the sidelines[5]. The humor sits in the collision between the real cult leader's grim biography and the sillier Leevil James edit genre the joke attaches to[6]. Earlier LeBron edits had already recast the four-time MVP as a villain using dark filters and ominous audio, under names like 'LeBonBon' and 'Leevil James'[8]. The soundalike gave that bit an actual historical name to point at, and the Hulu docuseries 'Daughters of the Cult' from January 2024 had already seeded wider recognition of LeBaron himself[7]. ## How to Use Typical posts take a LeBron James highlight or edit, often one already circulating in the Leevil James genre, lay 'You Are My Sunshine' over the clip, and label the player 'Ervil LeBaron' in captions or voiceover. Mock-documentary variants push the gag by narrating an 'evil LeBron' who ordered hits like the real cult leader[5]. ## Frequently Asked Questions ### What is Ervil LeBaron?
