# Gag City

Gag City is a fan-created fantasy world tied to Nicki Minaj's December 2023 album Pink Friday 2, where Barbz fans produced AI-generated images of a pink metropolis to hype the release. What started as queer slang for being shocked or amazed turned into a flood of pink skyline edits, celebrity arrival jokes and plane crash memes on X in the week before the record dropped.

## Origin
The slang root goes back to the 2000s, 2010s and 2020s LGBTQ+ community, where "gag" became shorthand for being shocked or amazed[1]. On January 27th, 2022, Nicki Minaj fan account @4ktbarbie used "gag city" in that stronger sense on X, which Know Your Meme logs as one of the earliest documented examples of the phrase[2]. Minaj herself later promised fans the Pink Friday 2 era would take them to "Gag City," a line Vulture noted in its coverage of the album's shifting release date[3].

The AI-image format emerged on December 1st, 2023, when X user @hardtingz posted a pink plane labeled "gag city" flying over a cloud-covered skyline echoing the Pink Friday 2 cover art, captioned "otw to gag city"[5]. The post picked up more than 1,500 likes within five days and set the template every follow-up edit copied[2].

## Overview
Gag City runs on two layers. The first is the slang itself, drawn from the LGBTQ+ community's long use of "gag" or "gagged" to express shock, awe or amazement, used in a sense close to "slay"[1]. Fans of Nicki Minaj, known as the Barbz, took that word and stretched it into a place name, treating "Gag City" as a fantasy destination you travel to whenever something hits hard enough to leave you speechless[2].

The second layer is the visual format. In the week before Pink Friday 2 arrived, Barbz on X generated pink-saturated cityscapes with AI tools, mimicking the subway, clouds and skyline on Minaj's album cover[3]. A typical post shows a plane, blimp or UFO branded with the fandom's name arriving at a pink airport, with a caption like "otw to gag city" or "[fanbase] have landed in gag city"[5]. Jokes about security breaches, plane crashes and residents praying in the streets gave the city a running lore of its own[4].
