# Getting The Milk Memes Getting The Milk Memes draws on the dad-left-for-milk cliche, with online posters turning the running joke about absent fathers into self-deprecating one-liners. An early Twitter post by @_SeanWick in June 2013 compared the setup to the plot of Taken 2[1], and by 2023 the punchline had reached TikTok as creators retooled sounds like Beetlejuice What Are You Doing to fit the format[4]. ## Origin The dad-left-for-milk cliche predates the meme era, with the sitcom Punky Brewster using the premise as a plot device after its September 1984 premiere[5]. The specific online version traces to a June 14, 2013 post from Twitter user @_SeanWick, who wrote that after watching Taken 2 he figured abduction was the only explanation for why his dad never returned with the milk[1]. That tweet frames the gag around the Taken 2 plot of a grown adult being kidnapped, which lets the father be absent through no fault of his own[1]. - **Platform:** Twitter (early jokes) / TikTok (viral spread) - **Creator:** Unknown - **Date:** 2013 ## Overview Posts in the Getting The Milk Memes format usually hinge on the implied joke that a parent, almost always a dad, left to buy milk and never came home. Captions often match an everyday supermarket photo with a line claiming the user finally spotted their father after years or decades[2]. The humor works through self-deprecation and absurd time scales, since the parent is both missing and still out on the errand[1]. Variations stretch the setup onto any sudden abandonment, not only fathers[5]. Some edits layer pop culture scenes onto it, like a TikTok that puts a Beetlejuice green screen inside a grocery store aisle[4]. Others play it straight with photos the poster insists should not exist, like a childhood image rewritten as a reunion decades late[2]. ## How to Use A typical Getting The Milk Memes post combines a mundane image, often a grocery store aisle or an old family photo, with a caption claiming the user finally located the parent who left years earlier[2]. Common conventions include wildly exaggerated time spans, references to the exact grocery item (milk or cigarettes), and a self-deprecating acknowledgement that the premise is a joke[4]. ## Frequently Asked Questions ### What is Getting The Milk Memes?
