# Girlhood Is A Spectrum Girlhood Is A Spectrum is an exploitable template that uses an arrowed spectrum line to place two wildly different images at either end, framing femininity as oscillating between opposites. Originating from an Instagram post by @moonflowerette in December 2022, the format spread across Tumblr, Twitter and TikTok through early 2023, with variations swapping in Hello Kitty, Biblically Accurate Angels and Gregor Samsa. ## Origin On December 21st, 2022, Instagram user @moonflowerette posted the original image, labeling the arrowed line with 'wounded baby animal' on one end and 'grotesque bug' on the other under the caption 'girlhood is a spectrum'[1]. The account hid its exact like count, but the post drew enough engagement that cross-platform reposts began within days[1]. Two days later, on December 23rd, 2022, Tumblr user fxlthyangxl reposted the image, racking up roughly 8,200 notes within two months[2]. That Tumblr circulation gave the format its first wider audience outside Instagram and set up the Twitter wave that arrived the same week[1]. - **Platform:** Instagram (origin) / Twitter and Tumblr (viral spread) - **Creator:** @moonflowerette - **Date:** 2022 ## Overview At the heart of the format sits a horizontal arrow with a labeled image on each tip, suggesting that womanhood swings between two absurd poles rather than sitting on a single point[1]. The original pairing placed a 'wounded baby animal' against a 'grotesque bug,' setting the tone for every variant that followed by yoking something soft and pitiful to something monstrous and unsettling[1]. Remixers kept the arrow and the caption but swapped the endpoints to self-deprecating effect. Later edits ranged between a 'creepy porcelain doll' and a 'big lizard,' or a Biblically Accurate Angel and Gregor Samsa from Franz Kafka's The Metamorphosis[4][5]. The humor leans into the chaotic emotional range posters claim to feel in a single afternoon, treating cuteness and body horror as adjacent coordinates on the same line[1]. ## How It Spread On December 27th, 2022, Twitter user @Butch_4_Bitch posted the first widely shared variant, swapping the originals for a 'creepy porcelain doll' and a 'big lizard,' and collecting roughly 18,500 likes over two months[4]. The following day, @greydomovoy reposted @moonflowerette's original image on Twitter, earning around 60 likes in the same window[3]. By December 29th, Twitter user @epistamy pushed the format further with an edit ranging between a Biblically Accurate Angel and Gregor Samsa from The Metamorphosis, which collected about 88,200 likes in two months[5]. Into early 2023, the template kept generating edits on Twitter and TikTok[1]. On February 9th, 2023, Twitter user northstardoll tweeted a version ranging between Hello Kitty and a dark, cryptid-like stick figure, which brought in roughly 171,200 likes in six days and gave the meme its largest single engagement spike on record[6]. ## Frequently Asked Questions ### What is Girlhood Is A Spectrum?
