Overview

Good Guy Lucifer is an advice animal image macro featuring a suited man with angel wings sipping a martini, presented as a friendlier version of the biblical devil3. Captions typically pick a moment from scripture and reframe Lucifer's actions as fair, generous, or thoughtful rather than evil. Instead of horns, flames, and fury, the joke gives Christianity's arch-villain a cocktail lounge treatment.

The humor leans on passages like Isaiah 14:12-15, where Lucifer is called a 'morning star' cast down from heaven1. The image itself is not custom art: it is Christopher Moeller's cover for issue 16 of Mike Carey's DC Comics series 'Lucifer'3. Atheist and skeptic communities on Reddit used the format to argue that a straightforward reading of the Bible actually makes Lucifer look decent, and the joke stuck as a way to poke at literal scriptural readings2.

The first Good Guy Lucifer image macro was posted to r/atheism on October 23, 20112. That same day, the LOL God blog featured the picture, pushing the format beyond the atheism subreddit and into wider circulation online3.

How It Spread

Within a week of that first Reddit post, the format hit the podcast An American Atheist and appeared on aggregators including BuzzFeed and Ranker4. It jumped from r/atheism into r/adviceanimals, where the broader Reddit meme audience picked it up, and it gained real traction on Tumblr, where users kept adding new captions built around biblical trivia2.

By November 1, 2011, a dedicated Quickmeme page for the format had gathered 181 Good Guy Lucifer submissions in barely more than a week5. Ranker also compiled a ranked list of the best entries from the format's early run4.

How to Use This Meme

Templates typically layer white top and bottom text over the martini image in the classic advice animal Impact-font style5. A common setup starts with a biblical action attributed to Lucifer, often paraphrased from Isaiah 14 or elsewhere in the Old Testament, and ends with a punchline that reframes the action as reasonable or kind1.
