Overview

Goose the Cat is the ginger tabby character from Marvel's 2019 Captain Marvel film and the older Ms. Marvel comic run5. In the comics she goes by Chewie and belongs to an alien species called Flerken, felines that look like ordinary house cats on the outside but hide tentacles and other abilities inside3.

The appeal came from that gap between the cute exterior and the alien reality. In the movie, Goose shows up next to Carol Danvers as a seemingly harmless pet before the plot flips the script on what she actually is1.

Chewie the Cat first appeared in Giant-Size Ms. Marvel #1 in April 20065. The character wasn't referred to by name in dialogue until Ms. Marvel Vol. 2 issue 5, published in September of that same year5. She was written in as Carol Danvers' pet cat, which set up the later reveal that she was hiding an alien secret5.

How It Spread

On September 18, 2018, Marvel released the first Captain Marvel promotional poster, and iO9 writer Jill Pantozzi4 spotted the cat lurking in the shadowy background. She cranked the brightness on the image and posted her discovery with the caption 'I'M SORRY I HAD TO COMPLETELY BLOW OUT YOUR POSTER @captainmarvel BUT HELLO KITTTTTTTY!', which pulled in more than 40 retweets and 200 likes over the next four months4.

On December 3, 2018, Marvel dropped the second trailer for the film, which gave audiences their first real look at Goose in motion1. The video pulled in over 30 million views within two months and pushed the cat further into fan chatter3.

Marvel Studios2 followed up on January 16, 2019, with a set of individual character posters, including one dedicated entirely to Goose. The tweet earned roughly 2,400 retweets and 11,000 likes within its first 24 hours2, and Twitter later put together a Moments page collecting the character posters3.
