# Hippie Chick Interviewed at a Phish Show
On Halloween 1996, MTV filmed a short interview with Amy, a young woman with dreadlocks and a leashed dog, outside a Phish concert. The footage went viral on Reddit in late 2023[1] and again on X in September 2024, when a 100-second cut hit 2.9 million views and viewers called her 'a literal angel' while arguing the clip's warmth could not be filmed today[2].
## Origin
Redditor Hahinator posted the four-minute MTV clip to /r/OldSchoolCool on December 26, 2023, under the title '1996: Hippy chick with a dog is interviewed outside a Phish concert on Halloween'[1]. Over the next nine months the thread collected more than 20,000 upvotes[3]. Deep in the comments, a user purportedly identified Amy and said she was now guiding whitewater rafting trips; that comment was later deleted but survived in replies[5].
MTV made the original 1996 footage and the identity of whoever first digitized and uploaded it is unconfirmed, so no single person can be credited with creating the meme itself. The December 2023 Reddit post is the earliest known appearance that led to viral spread[1].

## Overview
Amy's interview runs about four minutes and shows her answering an MTV reporter's questions about how she scrounges tickets, funds her tour-following lifestyle, and shares sleeping arrangements with friends, often ending answers with a giggle[1]. Her brown-and-white sweater, dreadlocks, visible intoxication, and the dog at her feet became the visual anchors viewers kept pointing at as something no one performs on camera anymore[3].
Online reaction treated the footage as an artifact rather than a joke. The most upvoted X responses praised Amy's lack of self-presentation, with one widely shared post arguing that fondness for her was about speaking without ironic distance or recycled pop-culture references[4]. A parallel thread tried to pin down her identity, and one Reddit commenter claimed she now works as a river rafting tour guide, though the comment was later deleted[5].
