Hooder is a slang term and meme associated with traders in the Robinhood ecosystem, especially memecoin traders on Robinhood Chain. The term evolved from earlier expressions such as "Robin Hooder" and "Robinhooder," which were used as nicknames for users of the Robinhood trading app as early as 2019–2020. After Robinhood Chain launched in July 2026 and quickly developed an active memecoin scene, "Hooder" was revived as a broader identity for chain-native traders, degens, and community members.

The meme often draws on Robin Hood, "the Hood," outlaw, and trading-culture imagery, and has since appeared in tokens, NFT collections, trading tools, and social-media personas.

The word Hooder has a longer history than most meme encyclopedias currently acknowledge. The earliest artifact is a GitHub userscript literally named "Robinhooder," created September 28, 2019 1, which enhanced the Robinhood website. By May 2020, a Reddit post in r/RobinHoodPennyStocks opened with "Good Afternoon My Fellow Robin Hooders" 2, with the author calling himself a "weary RobinHooder." By August 8, 2020, the standalone word "Hooder" was being used, with one Redditor writing "I've been a Hooder... for about 3.5 years now" 3, clearly referring to being a Robinhood brokerage user. Japanese financial writing from the period even described "Robinhooder" as a newly coined term for Robinhood users 5.

How It Spread

The term resurfaced in a new context after Robinhood Chain's public mainnet launched July 1, 2026 6. Within days, memecoins dominated the chain. CoinDesk reported on July 9 that an early CASHCAT trader turned $800 into over $1 million 7. By July 13, the chain was doing billions in DEX activity with speculative memecoin trading as its defining use case 8. CEO Vlad Tenev even embraced it, posting that although Robinhood Chain was built for RWAs, "it works great for memes too." On-chain evidence shows the Hooder name being used on Robinhood Chain by July 10, 2026 10, with multiple HOODER-branded liquidity pools created by July 11 11. By late July, HooderScan emerged as an analytics platform whose "Top Hooders Leaderboard" ranks traders by 24-hour PNL and win rate 9. By August, Hooder had spread into NFT collections (including a 5,000-piece Hooder collection and HOODERS outlaw-themed project), social media personas like @Callmehooder, and broader ecosystem branding.
