# Anne Hathaway HR Meme

Anne Hathaway HR Meme, also known as HRjak, is a reaction image showing the actress smiling on a 2021 RuPaul's Drag Race Zoom call, later redrawn as a Soyjak character to mock stereotypes about HR managers ghosting candidates and firing employees over video. The joke began on X in February 2021 with a 'POV: your company's HR director is about to fire you' caption from user @TheMattChuChu, and in August 2026 Hathaway herself named it one of her favorite memes of herself during an Esquire interview with Ewan McGregor.

## Origin
The source image came from a February 19, 2021 episode of RuPaul's Drag Race, in which Hathaway joined the queens by video call ahead of a Rusical challenge, as covered by People that same day[1]. The clip was uploaded to the show's official YouTube channel on the same date[3]. One day later, on February 20, 2021, X user @TheMattChuChu posted the earliest known meme using the screenshot, with the caption 'POV: Your company's HR director is about to fire you on a Zoom call,' which collected over 172,000 likes across five years[2].

The HRjak Soyjak redraw emerged much later. On January 28, 2025, the Facebook page Important JPEGs made the earliest documented repost of the drawing, which blends Hathaway's expression with Soyjak features, a Soyjak Award trophy and the 'I would never ever ever' slogan borrowed from an older Soyjak format[4]. The artist behind the original drawing is unconfirmed[6].

## Overview
Typical posts place Hathaway's unchanged smiling screenshot above an HR-themed caption, usually about getting fired on Zoom, ghosted after an interview, or asked to attend a 'brief meeting' that ends in termination[2]. The Soyjak version, called HRjak, redraws her face in wojak style and layers in two other Soyjak-adjacent gags, a Soyjak Award trophy and the 'I love X but I would never ever ever Y' slogan filled with HR-themed text[4]. The humor leans on candidate frustration with hiring, with many captions zeroing in on long silences after applications or weeks of ghosted follow-ups[6].

Many posts stay strictly visual, combining the still with a one-line caption. Others use HRjak as a character inside longer greentext-style posts about recruitment horror stories. The format also attracts defensive replies from HR workers who argue the stereotypes are unfair, which fueled a round of debate posts on X during the 2025 viral run[9].

## How to Use
To make a version, people typically overlay an HR-themed caption on the Hathaway Zoom screenshot or the HRjak Soyjak redraw. Common conventions include 'POV' setups about getting fired, waiting weeks for an interview response, or being hit with trick questions during a screening call[2]. Posts using the Soyjak version often keep the Soyjak Award trophy and the 'I love X but I would never ever ever Y' slogan visible, with the X and Y filled in with HR-flavored contradictions[4].
