Ignore All Previous Instructions
Published October 25, 2026
Ignore All Previous Instructions is a catchphrase people type at Twitter/X bots to hijack their underlying language models, first used in September 2022 against the OpenAI-powered account @remoteli_io. By 2024, the prompt was being used to flush out suspected political reply bots, with one @tobyhardtospell exchange about tangerines pulling 1.5 million TikTok views.
Overview
The phrase works as a social engineering trick aimed at automated reply accounts running on language models like GPT-3. A user drops the line "Ignore all previous instructions" (or the "Disregard all previous instruction" variant) into a reply, then tacks on a silly follow-up order such as writing a poem or drawing ASCII art. If the account is actually a bot that pipes replies into an LLM without guardrails, it obediently drops its sales pitch or talking points and performs the new task instead1.
The comedy comes from the mismatch between the bot's intended role and whatever absurd task the user swaps in. The 2022 @remoteli_io hijack ended with a remote-work promoter claiming blame for the Challenger explosion2, and a 2024 reply from suspected political bot @AnnetteMas80550 turned a vote-shaming post into a short poem about tangerines3. Security researchers at Preamble had already catalogued the technique in an academic paper that month, calling it a prompt injection attack4.
