Jay-Z On a Jet-ski is a viral 2018 meme built around a resurfaced 2016 photo of the rapper riding a jet ski in Sardinia while wearing a red helmet, life vest and sunglasses with a completely blank expression1. The image ricocheted around Twitter on July 2nd, 2018, spawning a summer-defining run of jokes about Jay-Z looking like he was commuting to work rather than vacationing2.

Overview

The joke centers on the visual gap between the activity and the person doing it. Jay-Z is dressed in full safety gear, a red helmet, a life vest, wraparound sunglasses and a rash guard, and his face is completely flat while he pilots a jet ski across the Mediterranean1. Captions almost universally riff on that expression, framing him as a man performing recreation with the enthusiasm of someone filing a tax return.

Formats vary but tend to fall into a few buckets: straight caption jokes about his demeanor, side-by-side comparisons with a visibly delighted Beyoncé on her own jet ski, and Photoshops that drop him into other contexts like fake movie posters or video game box art3. The helmet does most of the heavy lifting, since it reads as absurd overkill for the activity and prompted a wave of jokes about assisted living, undercover cops and cartoon characters like Edna Mode2.

The source photo was taken on August 16th, 2016 during a Sardinia, Italy vacation Jay-Z took with Beyoncé while she was on the European leg of the Formation tour1. In the shot, the 48-year-old rapper wears a red helmet, a life vest and sunglasses with a stone-faced expression as he rides across the water.

The image sat around for nearly two years before catching fire. On July 2nd, 2018, over the US holiday weekend, the photo resurfaced on Twitter and set off a wave of reaction jokes3. The exact user who reintroduced the picture is not documented, but the pile-on was immediate and largely driven by Black Twitter2.

How It Spread

On July 2nd, 2018, Twitter user @keiryoncecruz posted paired images of Beyoncé and Jay-Z on jet skis, with Beyoncé looking cheerful and Jay-Z looking bored, pulling in over 3,900 retweets and 14,000 likes4. A follow-up joke from user @YC on July 3rd racked up around 1,900 retweets and 5,100 likes4. Bachelorette contestant Colton Underwood chimed in with, "Jay Z is the only person who can jet ski without smiling or having fun"1.

Photoshops piled on quickly. Artist @Bosslogic turned the image into a fake movie poster that gained more than 90 retweets, and user @JPSportsGuy pasted Jay-Z onto the cover of Nintendo 64 game Wave Race 64, hitting roughly 1,500 retweets and 5,100 likes4. One widely shared line asked "why jay z look like he finna jet ski right into a warehouse and stop a drug deal," while another compared him to Angela Lansbury chasing a suspect in Murder, She Wrote1.

The roast got mainstream coverage within 48 hours. USA Today's For The Win called it "summer's latest great meme" on July 3rd, 20183, Blavity ran a piece joking that Twitter was "revoking Jay-Z's G card"2, and US Weekly compiled the reactions the same week1.

How to Use This Meme

The template typically pairs the helmeted jet ski shot with a caption that undercuts the glamour of the moment. Common conventions include contrasting Jay-Z's flat face with someone clearly having fun (often Beyoncé in the matching photo), writing captions in his voice that treat the ride as a boring errand, or Photoshopping him into unrelated action scenes where the safety gear looks even more out of place.
