# Kilometers Morales
Kilometers Morales is a running pun format that renames the Spider-Man spin-off hero Miles Morales after metric distance units, playing on his first name being a homophone for the imperial measurement. The joke first turned up on 9GAG in January 2018 and saw a second life around Sony's 2020 Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales release on PS5. By November 2020, r/dankmemes was pushing a PS5-themed version past 21,500 upvotes.
## Origin
The earliest documented example appeared on 9GAG on January 24, 2018, under the title "1.60934 kilometers to be exact," a nod to the exact miles-to-kilometers conversion factor[2]. That post picked up 39 points and four comments over the following three years, suggesting the gag circulated quietly for a long stretch before catching on[3].
No single confirmed author is credited with the first Kilometers Morales edit, and Sony's Insomniac Games developed the Spider-Man title that later gave the format new fuel but did not create the meme itself[3].

## Overview
Kilometers Morales, also known as Miles Morales Name Puns, works by swapping the hero's first name for a non-imperial distance unit, with Kilometers Morales positioned as the European counterpart to the American Miles Morales[1]. A typical post pairs promotional Spider-Man art or PS5 box art with a retitled name, sometimes accompanied by captions imagining Miles's identity changing when he lands outside the United States[3].
Other variants push the joke into more absurd units, from nautical miles to furlongs, though Kilometers Morales is the version that stuck hardest in 2020 memes[3]. The humor leans entirely on the homophone with the measurement "miles," so edits usually keep Miles's original costume and face untouched while altering only the text.
## How to Use
Posts typically take an official Miles Morales image, often PS5 cover art or a comic panel, and replace "Miles" with another distance unit while leaving the rest of the design intact. Common conventions include labeling the Kilometers version as European, framing the alternate unit as an "international release," or stacking several unit swaps side by side as a joke chart.
