# Lisan al-Gaib (Dune Prophecy) Lisan al-Gaib is the Fremen prophecy term from Frank Herbert's Dune for an off-world messiah, famously chanted at Paul Atreides in Denis Villeneuve's films. The phrase showed up in a few jokes after Dune: Part One in 2021, but exploded across X and TikTok after Dune: Part Two opened in late February 2024. By March 2024, Stilgar reaction edits and Timothée Chalamet captions filled timelines, with one Stilgar Stare tweet hitting 7 million views in two days. ## Origin Lisan al-Gaib comes from Frank Herbert's Dune novel, where the Fremen use it for an off-world messiah figure that the Bene Gesserit sisterhood planted in local religion as part of their long breeding program[5]. In Denis Villeneuve's 2021 Dune: Part One, Fremen chant the term at Paul Atreides when he arrives on Arrakis, and user @khaled1240 uploaded the scene to YouTube on November 4, 2021, where it collected over 128,000 views in three years[2]. Earliest meme uses followed within weeks of Part One's release. On October 14, 2021, X user @thegrlfromperth posted a photo of Chalamet with the all-caps caption 'HE IS MUAD'DIB LISAN AL GAIB THE KWITSATZ HADERACH'[3]. On November 22, 2021, r/dunememes posted a comic strip of Paul denying his messiah status while Fremen insist otherwise, which collected over 280 upvotes and eight comments[4]. - **Platform:** X (origin) / TikTok (viral spread) - **Creator:** Unknown - **Date:** 2021 ## Overview Most Lisan al-Gaib posts recycle a single beat from Villeneuve's adaptation, where Fremen characters hail Paul Atreides as their prophesied messiah. Humor comes from the gap between that solemn religious moment and whatever mundane action a poster is describing, like Chalamet sipping a beer or showing off a dance move[1]. Stilgar, the Fremen leader played by Javier Bardem, became the face of the format because of his wide-eyed reaction shots from Dune: Part Two[7]. Two main variations circulate online. Text captions declare that any Chalamet behavior proves he is the Lisan al-Gaib, usually in all-caps parroting the film's chant[3]. A second group reuses the Stilgar stare or the chanting Fremen crowd as a reaction clip, often set to the 'Who Is Duffy' Grimes audio on TikTok[8]. ## How to Use A typical Lisan al-Gaib post attaches an image, clip or screenshot of Timothée Chalamet to a parenthetical caption that reads some trivial action as fulfillment of Fremen prophecy. Stilgar's reaction stare commonly sits in a reply or gets stitched to another video to signal that the poster has witnessed proof of the Lisan al-Gaib, with the Grimes 'Who Is Duffy' audio common under TikTok edits[8]. ## Frequently Asked Questions ### What is Lisan al-Gaib (Dune Prophecy)?
