# Lord of the Rings Elves of Color Hoax

A fake news graphic claiming Amazon's upcoming Lord of the Rings series would cast non-white elves spread across 4chan and Twitter in early November 2018. Though no such announcement existed, the mock headline fooled thousands of users into posting angry reactions, which The Daily Dot debunked on November 7th, 2018.

## Origin
An anonymous poster on 4chan's /tv/ board uploaded the mock article on November 5th, 2018, with a caption mocking anyone who believed the Amazon adaptation would avoid progressive casting[2]. The thread used a slur-laden boast that readers had been fooled, framing the image itself as the punchline rather than a real leak[2]. Amazon had not made any casting announcement at that point, and The Daily Dot later confirmed the graphic was fabricated[1].

- **Platform:** 4chan /tv/ (origin), Twitter (viral spread)
- **Creator:** Unknown (anonymous 4chan /tv/ poster)
- **Date:** 2018

## Overview
The image pairs a still from Peter Jackson's film trilogy with a fabricated headline reading, "Amazon Studios confirms that their Middle Earth will include Elves of color"[1]. No such confirmation came from Amazon, and little about the series had been announced when the graphic began circulating[1]. The point of the bait was to provoke fans who assumed white skin was a required trait for Tolkien's elves[3].

Reactions split along predictable lines. Some users treated the fake announcement as a betrayal of childhood favorites, while others pointed out that Tolkien does not actually specify elf skin color in the books and argued the casting choice would be defensible either way[1][3].
