The rumor was started by the American gossip website Radar Online and saw viral spread in early March 2025 after the British tabloid Daily Mail covered it, with users postingmemes and sharing fake pornographic video s and image s of Mangione.

On March 4th, 2025, the parody Xaccount @Pob Base made a post about the rumor that received over 4.7 million views, 4,000 reposts, and 60,000 likes in one day. The posts were followed by meme s in which users asked for a way to find the tapes or claimed that they did. Some users shared photoshopped pornographic image s of Mangione or mispresented unrelated pornographic video s as his video s. Also on March 4th, 2025, Xuser @Murdoink posted a That's Disgusting. Where?meme edit about the rumored video s that received over 410 upvotes and 3,700 likes in one day. Later on March 4th, 2025, Xuser @chiweethedog wrote that the rumor went against earlier reports that Mangione suffered from a chronic back condition that affected his ability to have sex.
