# Mug Root Beer Mug Root Beer, also known as Mug Moment, is an ironic fandom joke that started in March 2020 when Vinesauce streamer Joel asked his Twitch chat about the root beer brand with a bulldog on the can[1]. The chat's reply of 'Mug Moment' became a copypasta that mutated into a years-long bit celebrating the soda, feuding with Barq's, and crowning the Mug bulldog as a reluctant mascot of ironic internet reverence. ## Origin The joke started on March 22nd, 2020, during a Twitch stream by Vargskelethor, better known as Joel, a Swedish streamer in the Vinesauce collective. While playing Black Mesa, Joel asked chat what root beer brand had 'a giant dog on it,' and viewers spammed 'Mug' back at him. When one chatter typed 'Mug Moment,' Joel laughed and repeated the phrase, cementing it as a copypasta[3]. The next day, March 23rd, 2020, the Vargskelethor Uncut YouTube channel uploaded the clip of the exchange, which pulled roughly 140,000 views over the following year and a half and became the canonical source for the bit[1]. Hours after the stream, Reddit user NicholasTheEgghead14 posted an Impact-font edit of a Mug can to r/Vinesauce, the first known meme using the catchphrase[2]. - **Platform:** Twitch / Vinesauce (viral spread on Reddit, Twitter, TikTok) - **Creator:** Unknown (coined by an anonymous viewer in Vargskelethor's Twitch chat) - **Date:** 2020 ## Overview Mug Root Beer / Mug Moment memes treat the Pepsi-owned soda and its bulldog mascot with the kind of overblown patriotic devotion normally reserved for sports teams or nation-states. The core bit is ironic worship: edits of the Mug can with Impact font captions, declarations that any sip is a 'Mug Moment,' and running feuds pitting Mug against rivals like Barq's and A&W[3]. A secondary strand of the joke centers on the bulldog itself. Reddit spun off r/MugDog, and later TikTok users adopted the mascot as a profile picture while posting mock anthems and worship videos about the drink[3]. The humor hinges on applying absurd emotional weight to a mid-tier supermarket beverage, with the Vinesauce chat's original spam cadence of 'It's Mug' acting as the format's north star[1]. ## How to Use The format typically pairs an image of a Mug Root Beer can or its bulldog mascot with mock-reverent text. Common conventions include captioning any sip or sighting as a 'Mug Moment,' framing Mug as locked in eternal rivalry with Barq's or A&W, and using the bulldog as a profile picture or avatar. On TikTok, creators often sing or lip-sync patriotic-sounding anthems dedicated to the drink[6]. ## Frequently Asked Questions ### What is Mug Root Beer?
