NCT, short for Neo Culture Technology, is a K-pop boy group launched by SM Entertainment in 2016 with an unusual concept: an uncapped roster split into city-based sub-units. What started with a January 2016 keynote from SM founder Lee Soo-man grew into four active sub-units and one of the most dissected fandom structures in K-pop.

Overview

The NCT setup runs on a rotating roster split across sub-units, each tied to a city or market1. NCT U works as a flexible mix-and-match unit, NCT 127 holds a fixed Seoul-based lineup, and NCT Dream started as a graduation unit that cycled teenage members out at age 203. WayV covers the Mandarin market under SM's China imprint Label V4.

Fans track the group through member charts, unit debut dates, and full-roster projects like NCT 2018 Empathy, which gathered every active member into a single album release2. The scaling model gave the fandom, called NCTzens, plenty of internal lore to argue about, from unit reshuffles to graduation timelines3.

In January 2016, SM Entertainment founder Lee Soo-man delivered a keynote titled 'SMTOWN: New Culture Technology 2016' laying out a group with no cap on members, sub-units based in different cities, and a rotating structure that echoed how SM had handled mid-2000s group Super Junior2.

NCT U debuted first on April 9, 2016 with 'The 7th Sense,' followed a day later by 'Without You'1. The starting six were Taeil, Taeyong, Doyoung, Ten, Jaehyun, and Mark3.

How It Spread

NCT 127 arrived on July 7, 2016 with 'Firetruck,' pegging the sub-unit's number to Seoul's 127th line of longitude4. Yuta, Winwin, and Haechan filled out the fixed lineup, with Doyoung from NCT U and rookie Johnny Seo added by January 2017's Limitless EP2.

NCT Dream launched August 24, 2016 with 'Chewing Gum,' opening as a teenage rotation unit set to graduate members at age 203. Mark was tagged as the first Dream graduate at the end of 2018, though a 2020 restructure locked the lineup and pulled him back in4. In between, the March 2018 project album NCT 2018 Empathy gathered every current member across sub-units onto one release3.

WayV closed out the four-unit shape on January 17, 2019 with the EP The Vision, released through SM's Chinese label Label V with Mandarin cuts of 'Regular' plus original track 'Dream Launch'5.
