Overview

Each illustration features a crudely drawn Northern English football supporter with pale skin, a shaved head and a track jacket, often holding a pint and standing before terraced houses or a chip shop2. Artists give the character traits linked to the British underclass stereotype, including Labour Party loyalty, heavy regional slang, and visual roots in older Wojak variants like Grug and Brainlet5.

Variants branched out from the football theme into general Northern life. One strand showed a 'Souf F.C.' rival representing London supporters, playing on the North-South divide3. Later editions moved into fictional scenarios, including an ancient Celtic version of the Norf character8 and a futuristic 'Norftech' space cop arresting a 'NonceBot'7.

The character first appeared on brit/pol/, one of /pol/'s general discussion threads, on December 11, 20171. A trip-poster going by 'Eddie' signed the drawing, which showed an early sketch of what would become the Norf F.C. fan. 'Goalposting' is an alternate nickname for the same character series5.

How It Spread

On February 7, 2018, an anonymous poster used the Grug Wojak template to depict a Norf F.C. fan, bringing the concept into wider /pol/ circulation2. The next day, February 8, drawings introduced a 'Souf F.C.' rival for London, creating a North-South club rivalry around the character3. By February 11, artists had abandoned the Grug base and drawn the character with original features4.

A February 25, 2018 illustration cemented the look that most later variants would copy6. Through 2018 the format expanded into alternate settings. One image dated September 23, 2018 reimagined Norf as a futuristic 'Norftech' space cop arresting a 'NonceBot'7. Another thread placed the character in an ancient Celtic era, mixing the Norf archetype with historical pastiche8.
