# Obamna Obamna is a mispronunciation of 'Obama' that Donald Trump uttered during an October 2018 campaign rally in Houston, where he blended the former president's name with the word 'amnesty.' The slip resurfaced two years later when The Daily Show put it in a 'Best Trump Word' bracket, and by November 2020 TikTok creators were combining the clip with a Joe Biden speech edited to sound like he was shouting 'Soda!' ## Origin The misspelling 'obamna' circulated on r/okbuddyretard as early as August 24th, 2018, when user ieatjamsauce posted an ironic Obama meme titled 'It's brock obamna!,' and another thread from October 18th used the same misspelling four days before Trump's rally slip[3]. On October 22nd, 2018, Trump held a political rally in Houston, Texas and began discussing the Second Amendment roughly 43 minutes into his speech[1]. At the 43:33 mark he said 'Obamna' instead of 'Obama,' likely blending the name with the word 'amnesty,' which he said immediately after the mispronunciation[1]. - **Platform:** YouTube (rally footage) / TikTok (viral spread) - **Creator:** Donald Trump (source of the slip); TikToker @kalebfurst popularized the Obamna/Soda edit - **Date:** 2018 ## Overview Edits typically splice two seconds of Trump saying 'Obamna' with a cut from Joe Biden's Super Tuesday speech in Minneapolis, where the last syllables of 'Minnesota' sound like 'Soda!' when the clip is chopped off early[1][5]. TikTokers hyped the back-to-back clips as the most inspirational words from each 2020 presidential candidate, often laying the audio over slow-motion footage, patriotic music or deadpan on-screen captions[6][7]. A separate strand of the joke took shape on Urban Dictionary, where users described Obamna as a magic incantation that summons Barack Obama from his slumber, with 'Soda!' acting as a counter-spell that kills whoever said it[8]. Other TikTok iterations stay purely visual, such as two users changing their bios to 'obamna' and 'soda' and then showing the profiles side by side on camera[9]. ## How It Spread On March 2nd, 2020, The Daily Show's YouTube channel quietly uploaded an unlisted clip of the mispronunciation[2]. Eight days later the show launched a 'Best Trump Word' bracket on Comedy Central's site that included Obamna as a contender, though it was voted out in round two[3]. The audio took off eight months later. YouTuber LitRandomness reuploaded an isolated version of Trump's clip on November 14th, 2020, drawing over 32,000 views in under a month[4]. On November 20th the same uploader posted an edit of Biden appearing to shout 'Soda!,' made by cutting the end off the word 'Minnesota' in his Super Tuesday speech in Minneapolis[5][10]. Later that day, TikToker @kalebfurst posted the earliest known mash of the two with an on-screen caption reading 'No matter your beliefs, I found something we can all agree on,' and the video reached more than 2.9 million views within three weeks[6]. TikToker @nick.salvagno uploaded a similar back-to-back edit on November 24th, labeling the two lines the best quote from each presidential candidate, and the clip reached over 1.1 million views in two weeks[7]. Urban Dictionary definitions from the same week described Obamna as a word that summons Barack Obama from slumber, with 'Soda!' as the deadly counter[8]. A related trend had two TikTokers change their bios so one read 'obamna' and the other read 'soda,' then show the profiles off in a video[9]. By December 9th, 2020, kalebfurst's audio had been used in more than 1,400 TikTok videos and the #obamna hashtag had over 5.4 million views[3]. ## How to Use Creators typically open a video with Trump's 'Obamna' audio, cut straight into the edited Biden 'Soda!' line, and overlay on-screen text that calls both lines the best quote from each 2020 presidential candidate[6][7]. A common convention is to deliver the setup deadpan, as if the clip is a serious political montage, and let the ridiculousness of the words carry the joke. ## Frequently Asked Questions ### What is Obamna?
