Sensitivity Note

In 2017, users on 4chan launched 'Operation O-KKK,' a deliberate trolling campaign to trick media into believing the OK hand gesture was a white supremacist symbol. While the campaign started as a hoax, the gesture was subsequently adopted unironically by some white supremacist groups, leading the ADL to list it as a hate symbol 'when used in the context of white supremacy.' The vast majority of OK hand usage remains entirely innocent — it's one of the most common gestures worldwide. Context is critical: the same gesture means 'OK/good' in everyday use but has been used as a dog whistle in specific extremist contexts.
