Priority Peter is a 2012 advice animal image macro built around a Reddit photo of a teenage boy fixated on his graphing calculator while surrounded by young women in swimsuits. The first captioned version hit /r/AdviceAnimals on September 11, 2012, and within 48 hours the format became one of the most compiled math-pun meme series of that fall.

Overview

Priority Peter is an advice animal template built on a single vacation snapshot: a bespectacled teenage boy hunched over a TI-84 graphing calculator while several young women in bathing suits lounge just behind him1. The joke writes itself, and the caption format locked in quickly. Top text sets up a math or calculator reference, bottom text delivers a suggestive punchline, and the last words of the two lines usually rhyme2.

The humor leans on mathematical jargon like sine, tangent, integrals, and polynomials paired with double entendres about the girls he is ignoring3. Compilers on humor blogs at the time compared the series to Chemistry Cat, another advice animal built around subject-matter puns rather than reaction faces2. Because the setup is so rigid, the format is essentially a rhyming exercise, and much of the appeal is watching submitters find new math terms that scan against a lewd second line1.

The source photograph was posted to /r/pics on November 7, 2011 by Redditor ti84power, under the title "TI84 + like a boss." The image collected more than 27,500 upvotes and 1,300 comments before the thread was archived3. It bounced back to /r/funny twice during 2012, and the September 2012 repost pulled in over 12,000 upvotes and 600 comments inside two days3.

The advice animal itself arrived on September 11, 2012, when the first captioned version of the photo was submitted to /r/AdviceAnimals. That earliest known macro read, "Sorry, ladies… when the calculator's clickin' / there can be no dickin'," which set the rhyming pun template that later entries followed3. The name Priority Peter attached to the character shortly after, as compilation sites began collecting the series1.

How It Spread

The turnaround from first caption to internet-wide compilation was under 24 hours. On September 11, 2012, the same day the first /r/AdviceAnimals macro went up, humor sites Pop Hangover, The FW, BuzzFeed, and UpRoxx all published roundups of standout entries in the series13. The FW framed the joke bluntly: the kid has his priorities straight because he is looking at his "sexy, sexy graphing calculator" instead of the women around him1.

On September 12, 2012, Barnorama and FunnyJunk added their own compilations, and a dedicated Facebook page for Priority Peter launched the same day23. Barnorama pitched the format as "like Chemistry Cat, but for math," tying it to the existing advice animal ecosystem2. A Quickmeme generator page for Priority Peter had already accumulated more than 1,200 submissions by that date, which gives a sense of how quickly the rhyming template attracted contributors3.

As an advice animal from the peak of the /r/AdviceAnimals era, Priority Peter never had a second viral wave the way reaction images have. It stayed a classic of the 2012 math-pun subgenre, referenced alongside Chemistry Cat and Biology Student when people list science-flavored advice animals2.

How to Use This Meme

The Priority Peter format typically pairs a math or calculator reference in the top caption with a suggestive punchline in the bottom caption, and the two lines commonly rhyme on their final words2. Submitters often build around terms like sine, cosine, tangent, integral, or polynomial, then hunt for a dating or hookup phrase that closes the couplet1. The image itself stays fixed. Only the text changes.
