# Russian Z Military Symbol Russian Z Military Symbol refers to the white letter Z painted on Russian military vehicles during the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, which quickly turned into a meme target as footage spread online. First documented in a February 22, 2022 Twitter video of a Russian convoy, the crude paint jobs clashed with assumptions about Russia's military polish. By late February, 4chan and Reddit users were calling the vans 'Scooby-Doo shit' and photoshopping Sam Hyde into the driver's seat. ## Origin Russian forces began crossing into Ukraine on February 22, 2022, with convoys of tanks, APCs and support vehicles bearing hand-painted white letters including Z, V and O. Twitter user IgorGirkin posted a video the same day showing a Russian convoy with the Z-inside-triangle marking visible on several vehicles[1]. Analysts later explained that the letters designated regional groupings, with Z standing for 'Zapad', or 'West' in Russian (translated from Russian)[6]. - **Platform:** Twitter (origin) / 4chan and Reddit (viral spread) - **Creator:** Unknown - **Date:** 2022 ## Overview Posts about the symbol mix war coverage with absurdist takes on the look of Russian equipment[3]. Sloppy white paint, often applied unevenly to civilian-looking vans and old military vehicles, became the main punchline, with users comparing the convoys to the Mystery Machine from Scooby-Doo and saying Russia's military reputation had been inflated[2]. Variants of the symbol, including Z inside triangles and squares, added another layer, with Telegram diagrams circulating that attempted to decode which Russian unit each marking identified[5]. A secondary photoshop format grew around comedian Sam Hyde, who was edited into the driver's seat of the Z van and into other vehicles from both sides of the conflict[4]. Casual viewers often had no idea what the Z actually meant, prompting explainer posts like an r/OutOfTheLoop breakdown of the 'Zapad' regional-marking theory for readers unfamiliar with Russian unit designations[6]. ## How to Use A typical post pairs a photo or clip of a Z-painted Russian vehicle with a joke about the sloppy paintwork, often a Scooby-Doo reference or a quip about overrated military hardware. Photoshop variants commonly drop a recognizable figure, usually Sam Hyde, into the driver's seat. Diagram-style posts riffing on which Z variant means what are another common form. ## Frequently Asked Questions ### What is Russian Z Military Symbol?
