# Spec Ops Guy Spec Ops Guy is the nickname given to an unidentified tall protester in full riot gear filmed at George Floyd protests in Washington D.C. in early June 2020. Clips of him lobbing tear gas canisters back at police and standing head and shoulders over an officer line spread on TikTok and Twitter, where viewers started a #specopsguy hashtag. By June 4, 2020, fan cams and simping tweets had turned the anonymous figure into a brief protest-era crush icon. ## Origin The George Floyd protests that drew Spec Ops Guy to D.C. began on May 26, 2020, after Floyd's killing in Minneapolis the previous day. The earliest known meme post centered on the protester appeared on June 1, 2020, when TikToker @callmejojo1 uploaded footage of him speaking down a line of officers with the caption "The Streets Spec Ops have been deployed," according to Know Your Meme's documentation[4]. A second clip, posted June 2, 2020 by TikToker @o000000000o0, showed him throwing a tear gas canister back toward police near the White House and carried a caption pitching it as a follow-up for people who had liked the "tall spec ops guy"[4]. The protester's actual identity was never confirmed in reporting, so he is remembered only by the nickname and the gear[3]. - **Platform:** TikTok (origin) / Twitter (viral spread) - **Creator:** Unknown - **Date:** 2020 ## Overview Spec Ops Guy is less a crafted meme format than a cluster of short clips passed between TikTok and Twitter in the first week of June 2020, all showing the same unidentified protester at the Washington D.C. demonstrations after George Floyd's killing. He wears full protective gear, a helmet and a gas mask, and stands notably taller than the police officers he faces, which is what viewers latched onto when they tagged him with nicknames like Tank and Riot[1]. The tone of posts about him sits between protest footage and thirst edit. Fan cams set his silent standoffs to pop songs, and tweets using the #specopsguy hashtag often declare the poster is simping for him or pair his image with the epic handshake template[2]. The Daily Dot covered the attention as part of a wider pattern of anonymous protesters getting internet-crush treatment during the 2020 unrest[3]. ## Frequently Asked Questions ### What is Spec Ops Guy?
