# Squidward Trying to Sleep A single shot of Squidward Tentacles lying wide-awake in bed, taken from the 2005 SpongeBob SquarePants episode 'Funny Pants,' turned into an image macro template about restless anxiety starting in 2013. By 2015, iFunny and Tumblr users were photoshopping Spoons Rattling SpongeBob and other characters into Squidward's bedroom window to visualize whatever was disrupting their nights. ## Origin Season four episode 65b of SpongeBob SquarePants, titled 'Funny Pants,' aired on September 30, 2005[9]. In the episode, SpongeBob laughs nonstop after Squidward tells him a joke, and the scene later used for the meme shows Squidward lying awake while laughter drifts in from outside[3]. Tumblr user evilscientist posted the first known meme use on August 28, 2013, pairing a clean screenshot of the shot with the caption 'when youll never have a chance with your crush'[1]. That post reached over 72,000 notes and seeded the sad-caption variant that most later edits followed[3]. - **Platform:** Tumblr (first macro) / iFunny and Tumblr (viral spread) - **Creator:** Tumblr user evilscientist (earliest known poster) - **Date:** 2013 ## Overview The format shows Squidward's sad, open-eyed stare while something unseen or absurd torments him from offscreen[1]. Most captioned versions place a top-text over the still that names whatever thing is stealing the poster's sleep, from unrequited crushes to a specific intrusive song lyric[3]. The joke works through the gap between Squidward's quiet misery and the ridiculous detail named above him. A second strain of edits replaces the dark square behind Squidward's bedroom window with a photoshopped character, usually SpongeBob doing something unsettling[4]. These versions stack a visual punchline on the caption so the viewer sees exactly what Squidward sees. Wholesome edits also circulate, with Squidward smiling when the thing outside the window is a comforting thought instead of a tormenting one[6]. ## How to Use To make one, people typically take the Squidward bedroom still and add a top-caption that names a specific sleep-destroying thought: an awkward memory, a crush situation, an earworm[1]. Common edits replace the black square in Squidward's window with a cropped character or object that visualizes the caption's subject, with Spoons Rattling SpongeBob being the most-iterated version[4]. ## Frequently Asked Questions ### What is Squidward Trying to Sleep?
