# Steam Support
Steam Support memes celebrate Valve's customer service team as absurdly fast and lethal at recovering hacked accounts, portraying the staff as hitmen or John Wick types going after whoever compromised a user. The joke bubbled on Reddit through the late 2010s and early 2020s before image macros and TikTok edits sent it viral in February 2025, with a John Wick macro posted to r/Steam topping 23,000 upvotes.
## Origin
Praise for Steam's customer service was a running theme on r/Steam long before the format went viral. A 2018 thread titled "Steam support is always the best" was followed by a 2023 post calling the team heroes for restoring a locked account, part of a steady stream of thank-you posts to the subreddit through the late 2010s and 2020s[4][5]. These earnest shout-outs built the reputation the later jokes would exaggerate.
The first known image macro riffing on that reputation was a Swole Doge vs. Cheems edit posted to r/memes by u/Bespaeyeeterskeet on August 27th, 2021, about a hacked account being recovered the same day[3]. The post picked up a few hundred upvotes but did not break out at the time, and the format stayed niche until the John Wick macro arrived almost four years later[1].

## Overview
At its core, the joke flips a customer service experience into an action movie. Posters pretend Valve's support team is a hit squad that mobilizes the moment a user reports a stolen account, hunts down the hacker, and returns the games within minutes. Common formats include John Wick walking toward the camera, Max Payne 3 gameplay footage standing in for the agents, and side-by-side comparisons where PlayStation or Xbox support looks sluggish next to Steam[1][2].
The Swole Doge vs. Cheems template was one of the first visual carriers, pairing a buff Doge labeled "Steam Support" against a sad Cheems labeled with whatever competing service got stuck fixing a problem[3]. Later entries lean on captions that time the response in seconds, voiceovers borrowed from action films, and edits where support staff appear to physically remove the hacker from the scene[2]. The humor works because it inverts the usual customer service meme, where support teams are the butt of the joke for being slow or unhelpful.
## How to Use
Posts typically pair a stock "account hacked" setup with an action movie visual that stands in for the support agents. Captions follow the beat "how Steam Support reacts when you report your account was hacked," then cut to John Wick walking down a hallway, Max Payne diving sideways, or a special forces breach. A common convention is to contrast Steam with another service, often PlayStation, Xbox, or EA, with the rival support team shown as inert while Steam's team gears up.
