Overview

The meme comes from a brief scene in which the character Frank Reynolds, mid-conversation, casually declares that "suicide is badass." The delivery is flat and matter-of-fact, which is what makes it funny. Frank, a wealthy degenerate played by Danny DeVito, treats the statement like common sense. The scene was screenshotted and clipped into image macros and short video edits, typically paired with content showing someone doing something dangerously stupid or self-destructive in a humorous context3.

The quote comes from Season 9, Episode 5 of *It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia*, titled "Mac Day," which premiered on October 2nd, 20133. In the episode, the gang spends the day doing whatever Mac wants, and Frank drops the line during one of the group's characteristically unhinged exchanges. Danny DeVito's deadpan delivery turned what could have been a throwaway line into one of the show's most quotable moments.

The first known meme usage appeared on November 25th, 2014, when Reddit user SkyGuy9 posted a series of captioned stills from the scene to the /r/IASIP subreddit, where it picked up over 430 upvotes3.

How It Spread

The meme stayed relatively quiet through 2015 before gaining real traction in early 2016. On February 22nd, 2016, a YouTube channel called "Frank Reynolds" uploaded a clip of the scene, and on April 5th, another channel called KneeSlapperTV posted their own version3. Together, the two clips pulled in over 1.1 million views within three years. That same month, the clip caught on with Coub users, who created multiple short looping edits of the moment1.

Through mid-2016, the image macro saw limited but steady use. A Facebook group called "Mr. Skeltal 2: The Revenge of the Bones" posted a version on August 1st, 2016, that picked up over 83 likes3.

The real breakout came in mid-November 2016, when an unknown user combined the Frank Reynolds macro with an earlier tweet by Twitter user @RespekMyAt_3. This mashup format spread quickly, with reposts hitting Hugelol2, Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, and other platforms in the following months. The combination of the absurd quote with unrelated self-destructive scenarios gave the meme a flexible template that worked across different contexts.

In the years after, the image macro maintained moderate use online, with new variations popping up on Reddit and meme communities whenever someone needed a reaction to gloriously dumb decisions3.

How to Use This Meme

The meme typically works in one of two ways:

1

As a standalone reaction: Post the captioned image of Frank saying "suicide is badass" in response to someone describing or showing reckless, self-destructive, or hilariously bad decision-making.

2

As a combo format: Pair a screenshot or text describing something absurd or dangerous with the Frank Reynolds image below it, using his quote as the punchline.
