Overview

Tai Lung Looking At Computer is a photoshopped reaction image showing the snow leopard villain from the 2008 animated film Kung Fu Panda staring at a computer monitor with a shocked, wide-eyed expression1. Since 2022, the edit spread as an image macro, exploitable, and reaction meme across Facebook, Reddit, and X (formerly Twitter), typically deployed as a reply to controversial opinions or content people find absurd5.

The visual joke leans on how out of place Tai Lung looks in front of a modern computer, since the character comes from an animated kung fu movie set in ancient China1. Meme users pair his over-the-top look of disbelief with whatever bewildering thing showed up in their feed, which is why the still works so well as a low-effort reply.

The earliest known post of the photoshopped image came from Facebook user @poxavictoremanuel.1023611, who dropped it as a reply on the platform2. Tai Lung is the antagonist from DreamWorks' Kung Fu Panda, the 2008 animated film in which he escapes prison and tries to steal the Dragon Scroll1. That original Facebook reply only picked up around four likes over the two years that followed, so the meme sat dormant before other accounts noticed it5.

How It Spread

The image caught on months later in 2022 as X users started reposting it. On September 11th, 2022, X user @guilherme_tel3s used the reaction to comment on a shocking scene from HBO's House Of The Dragon, and the tweet pulled in more than 359 likes and 64 retweets over the following two years4. A little over two weeks later, on September 28th, 2022, meme catalog account @reactjpg uploaded the image with the caption "Tai Lung Kung Fu Panda looking at computer screen exasperated confused shocked," landing over 335 likes and 43 retweets in the same window3.

From there, the reaction picture kept circulating on Reddit and X as a reply meme for controversial opinions and shocking content shared on social media, with users pulling out the shocked snow leopard whenever a post crossed some kind of line5.
