# TF2 Seal TF2 Seal, also known as Selbyen, refers to Silvia, a seal character from a community-made Team Fortress 2 Player Destruction map that Valve officially added in the July 2023 Summer update. Within days of the update, fan art, edits and crying-seal reaction posts flooded Twitter and the /r/tf2 subreddit, turning Silvia into one of that summer's biggest TF2 fandom obsessions. ## Origin On November 15th, 2022, mappers FGD5, Lo-Fi Longcat, Rhamkin and Zythe_ uploaded 'Selbyen' to the Steam Workshop, a Player Destruction mode map set in a Scandinavian coastal town where seals are released back to the sea[1]. The named seal, Silvia, waddles across the map while players kill opponents, grab the fish buckets they drop and feed her; whichever team feeds her the most wins the round[1]. A gameplay trailer for the map went up on Zythe_'s YouTube channel ahead of the official push[5]. Valve's July 12th, 2023 Summer update folded Selbyen and a batch of other community maps into Team Fortress 2's official rotation, giving Silvia a mainstream audience overnight[6]. Within hours of the patch dropping, players began clipping and sharing the seal rather than the actual gameplay. - **Platform:** Steam Workshop (map source) / Twitter and Reddit (viral spread) - **Creator:** FGD5, Lo-Fi Longcat, Rhamkin and Zythe_ (Selbyen map authors) - **Date:** 2023 ## Overview Silvia the seal is the mascot of Selbyen, a Player Destruction map where two teams farm fish buckets from fragged enemies and race to feed them to a seal crawling toward the sea[1]. Because the whole match literally revolves around a chubby animated seal flopping along the pier, Silvia became an instant fandom darling once the map hit official rotation[2]. Most TF2 Seal posts fall into two camps: sincere fan art of Silvia (often rendered as a boss-tier Saxton Hale variant or clipped mid-flop) and ironic shitposts that treat her sudden popularity as a 'forced meme.' Crying-seal edits, 'here comes the boy' audio swaps and in-game clips of Silvia doing her van-to-ocean waddle made up the bulk of the earliest wave on Twitter and /r/tf2[3][4]. ## How It Spread The first big viral post landed on July 12th, 2023, when Twitter user @heavyfortres uploaded a Silvia clip set to the 'here comes the boy' audio with the caption calling her the best thing Valve ever added to the game; it picked up more than 28,900 likes in two days[3]. The same day, @rhafamonas posted an edit of Silvia leaving the van at the map's start, which drew over 24,000 likes in the same window[2]. Fan art and shitposts moved onto Tumblr and /r/tf2 within a day. On July 13th, Redditor u/Geranium_Bonbon's drawing of Silvia reskinned as Saxton Hale hit over 1,400 upvotes on /r/tf2[7], while u/MenKiss's crying-seal post mocking Silvia as a forced meme cleared 2,100 upvotes on the same subreddit[4]. Mainstream meme coverage followed on July 14th, when the YouTube channel Lessons in Meme Culture put out a video explaining Silvia's sudden takeover of the TF2 fandom; it drew more than 100,000 views in under 24 hours[8]. ## How to Use TF2 Seal posts typically pair a clip or screenshot of Silvia with an audio meme (the 'here comes the boy' voiceover was the earliest common pairing) or recast her into existing TF2 fan art conventions, like painting her as a Saxton Hale boss sprite. Ironic posts often lean the other way, framing Silvia as an annoyingly forced mascot and crying over how fast she took over fan spaces[4]. ## Frequently Asked Questions ### What is TF2 Seal?
