# The Whale Passing a Blunt A Photoshopped still from Darren Aronofsky's 2022 film The Whale turned Brendan Fraser's tearful outburst into a stoner image macro, with his pointing finger swapped for a hand offering a weed blunt. First shared on Twitter in early February 2023, the edit spread through 4chan's /tv/ board and TikTok, where creator @liyargh stitched it with the original crying scene for over 700,000 plays by late March. ## Origin The earliest documented appearance of the edit traces to a now-deleted tweet by Twitter user @vylpill posted sometime on or before February 5th, 2023, which drew six replies before being removed[1]. A Russian-language repost on VK the following day linked back to the @vylpill tweet, helping fix its date as the likely source[1]. At roughly 12 p.m. EST on February 5th, 2023, an anonymous 4chan user posted the image to the /tv/ board with the caption "I NEED TO KNOW THAT I'VE ROLLED ONE FAT DOINK IN MY LIFE," which prompted a long reply chain and pushed the edit into wider circulation[3]. Fraser's original crying delivery in the film gave the image its emotional punch, since the Photoshop keeps the actor's wet eyes and anguished mouth intact while only replacing the hand[2]. - **Platform:** Twitter (source edit) / 4chan /tv/ (viral spread) - **Creator:** Unknown (earliest known poster: @vylpill on Twitter) - **Date:** 2023 ## Overview The Whale Passing a Blunt takes a crying close-up of Brendan Fraser's character Charlie from The Whale and swaps his accusatory pointed finger for a hand holding a lit weed blunt, with cartoony smoke drifting into the air[1]. The grafted hand is lifted from the ¿Quieres? meme, which is why Charlie's offered joint reads as a wordless invitation to the viewer rather than a reference to anything in the film itself[1]. In the source scene, Charlie is yelling the line "I need to know that I have done one thing right with my life" at his daughter, so the gag works by puncturing an unbearably heavy emotional moment with a casual bong-circle gesture[2]. Posters built on the contrast with absurd captions riffing on Charlie's crying delivery, including the 4chan version "I NEED TO KNOW THAT I'VE ROLLED ONE FAT DOINK IN MY LIFE"[3]. ## How to Use Posters typically share the Photoshopped still on its own as a reaction image when offering something to a friend, often with riff captions that rewrite Charlie's "one thing right with my life" line around weed, food, or petty internet goals. A common convention stitches or splices the edit next to the original crying clip so the viewer sees the emotional scene cut to the blunt-passing version for comic whiplash, as @liyargh did on TikTok[4]. ## Frequently Asked Questions ### What is The Whale Passing a Blunt?
