# TriHard TriHard is a Twitch emote based on a 2012 convention photograph of speedrunner Mychal "TriHex" Jefferson making a wide, excited face while holding a Dragon Ball wall scroll. After fans spammed the picture into Twitch emote polls for years, it got added to the platform and later turned into one of Twitch's most argued-over emotes thanks to the "TriHard 7" salute variant. ## Origin In June 2012, Twitch streamer Mychal "TriHex" Jefferson attended the Akon-23 anime convention in Dallas, Texas, where he posed for a photo with a fan while holding up a Dragon Ball wall scroll and pulling an exaggerated excited face[4]. The picture itself was just a convention snapshot, not an attempt at making an emote. The name "TriHard" came later, from Jefferson's speedrunning career. In a 2017 Kotaku interview, Jefferson traced the nickname to a 2014 Yoshi's Island run; his three-hour, 20-minute 100 percent performance at Awesome Games Done Quick 2014 made him a star in the scene[1]. Jefferson himself posted a YouTube explainer, "How did TriHard, the twitch emote, happen?" on February 24, 2014, walking through how the convention photo turned into a Twitch emote campaign[2]. - **Platform:** Anime convention photo (source) / Twitch (viral spread) - **Creator:** Mychal "TriHex" Jefferson - **Date:** 2012 ## Overview The emote is a cropped headshot of Jefferson wide-eyed and open-mouthed, a pose that reads as pure hype in chat[2]. On Twitch it typically gets spammed when something exciting happens on stream, when a streamer is trying extra hard at a game, or as a hello to someone appearing on camera[4]. A later variant pastes the number "7" and a helmet onto the face, a reference meant as a salute[6]. That variant, called TriHard 7, picked up a second and more hostile usage in chats, where it got spammed any time a Black person appeared on screen[7]. Jefferson, who is Black, has spoken publicly about refusing to let the racist usage define the emote[1]. The format also spawned WideHardo, a FrankerFaceZ emote that stretches TriHex's face onto a Peepo body and added to the service in early 2019[4]. ## Frequently Asked Questions ### What is TriHard?
