# Using the Shift Key When Caps Lock Is On Using the Shift Key When Caps Lock Is On is an image macro series mocking the typing error where holding Shift with Caps Lock enabled produces a lowercase letter at the start of an otherwise capitalized sentence. The format first appeared on MemeCenter in 2013 and later spawned a wave of Photoshopped portraits with shrunken heads that visually match the mismatched letter size. ## Origin The earliest documented post is a 2013 MemeCenter entry by user Gruder, which paired the First World Problems crying woman image with the caption 'Held SHIFT for capital letters / CAPS Lock was on'[1]. That version stuck to the standard reaction-image format and did not yet feature the shrunken-head visual that later defined the series[6]. In September 2014, Imgflip user XenusianSoldier posted a Know What Grinds My Gears version captioned 'wHEN I HIT CAPS LOCK INSTEAD OF SHIFT, AND i DON'T NOICE IT UNTIL I FINISH TYPING THE SENTENCE,' demonstrating the typo itself inside the caption[2]. The post reached over 6,400 views and 95 upvotes over the following years[2]. - **Platform:** MemeCenter / Reddit (viral spread) - **Creator:** Unknown - **Date:** 2013 ## Overview Using the Shift Key When Caps Lock Is On is a running joke about the specific annoyance of typing a word in all caps and holding Shift for the first letter, only to end up with a tiny lowercase character leading a wall of capitals, like 'wHEN I TYPE THIS'[1]. Early entries used plain text templates such as First World Problems and Know What Grinds My Gears to vent the frustration[2]. Around 2017, the gag shifted into Photoshop territory. Edits of real people (often celebrities) with heads shrunken down to match the look of a shortened first letter became the dominant form[3][4]. The visual pun turned a boring typing error into a specific class of cursed portrait, where the body is normal size and the head looks like a lowercase stub stuck in front of an uppercase sentence[5]. ## Frequently Asked Questions ### What is Using the Shift Key When Caps Lock Is On?
