# Wake Up Babe

Wake Up Babe, also known as Wake Up Babe, New X Just Dropped, is an image macro built around a man shaking his sleeping partner awake to announce that new content has arrived. The joke first circulated on Reddit's /r/sadboys in July 2019 around cloud rapper Bladee[1], then found a bigger audience on Twitter in May 2020 with a stock photo that became the common visual[2]. By September 2022, Instagram riffs applied the phrase to Queen Elizabeth II's death and the Pokemon Wiglett announcement, with the latter collecting over 107,000 likes[6].

## Origin
The earliest documented use of the phrase appeared on July 31, 2019, when a now-deleted Reddit account posted to /r/sadboys with the caption 'Niggas be like wake up babe! New Bladee,' earning around 190 upvotes over the next four years[1]. That version used a different stock photo and stayed niche inside the Bladee fan community[4].

On May 7, 2020, Twitter user @DeehsarZ replied to a since-deleted Lil Uzi Vert tweet with the version that would set the template, captioned 'Wake up babe, new Uzi tweet,' though the reply itself picked up just one like over three years[2]. @DeehsarZ's photo was the one that stuck, and later posters reused it rather than the Reddit original[4].

## Overview
Posts typically pair a photograph of a man leaning over a sleeping woman in bed with a caption following the formula 'wake up babe, new [X] dropped.' The X slot carries the joke, naming a musician's single, a tweet, a game reveal, a leaked screenshot, or any announcement the poster thinks their audience is anticipating[4]. Early examples stayed tight to music fandoms around Bladee and Lil Uzi Vert[2], while later versions targeted basically any content release treated as an event.

The original /r/sadboys post used a different stock image than the one that would carry the format forward, and @DeehsarZ's May 2020 Twitter reply to Lil Uzi Vert introduced the photo most posters copied afterwards[2]. The phrase also detached from the specific picture: by 2022, it rode along with any image someone wanted to pitch as earthshaking news, like the_political_compass's Queen Elizabeth II edit[5] or ssgxnintendo's Wiglett post[6].

## How to Use
A typical post pairs the sleeping-couple stock image with the caption 'wake up babe, new [X] dropped,' where X names whatever release or announcement the poster wants to call attention to[4]. Common conventions include slotting in a musician such as 'new Uzi' or 'new Bladee'[2], a game or product reveal[6], or a news event framed as a bulletin[5].
