The post asked which uninvited guest, a walrus or a fairy, would be more surprising to find at the door. Over roughly two weeks the poll collected more than 110,000 notes and 165,000 responses, with walrus winning near 80 percent of the vote[3]. - **Platform:** Tumblr (Reddit viral spread) - **Creator:** baddywronglegs - **Date:** 2024 ## Overview Posts in the debate typically take baddywronglegs' original wording as a prompt and work through one answer in detail. Walrus defenders tend to argue that a real walrus on a suburban front doorstep would require rethinking physics, geography, and transportation, while a fairy would only overturn one assumption about the supernatural[1]. Fairy defenders counter that a magical creature is the bigger surprise because large mammals already exist in the world[3]. The format also inspired follow-up polls that split answers by belief in magic, along with fan art showing both figures standing at the threshold at once[2]. Tone across Walrus or Fairy Debate posts leans earnest, with contributors writing long explanations of their reasoning and even a parody poem instead of throwaway jokes[5]. ## How to Use Answers typically restate the hypothetical, pick either walrus or fairy, and defend the choice with reasoning about biology, geography, or metaphysics. Common conventions include invoking local weather or location for the walrus side, as prokopetz did with Saskatchewan in February[4], and writing in heightened literary styles such as Edgar Allan Poe pastiche[5]. ## Frequently Asked Questions ### What is Walrus or Fairy Debate?
