WE WUZ KINGS
Published October 5, 2026
WE WUZ KINGS, also written as WE WUZ KINGZ N SHIET, is a 4chan /pol/ catchphrase coined in late 2015 to mock the Black Egyptian Hypothesis through broken AAVE dialect. The phrase spread from anonymous imageboards to YouTube and Steam forums, becoming the signature far-right shorthand for dismissing Afrocentric history and the trigger for mass trolling campaigns around the 2017 Assassin's Creed Origins reveal.
Overview
The format mocks the Black Egyptian Hypothesis, an academic theory holding that Ancient Egypt was a predominantly Black civilization and that pharaohs including Tutankhamen, Cleopatra, and Khafra were of African ancestry1. Posters stage an exaggerated AAVE voice ('WE WUZ KINGZ N SHEIT') and attach it to claims about Egyptian royalty, flipping the hypothesis into caricature of its proponents.
A second strain pairs the phrase with White European historical figures relabeled as Black, inverting the argument through parody macros of Caesar, Beethoven, and Napoleon4. The same shorthand got turned on hip hop records that lean into Black royalty imagery, pointedly Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp A Butterfly and Vince Staples' Summer '06. Across every variant the joke rides on written-out dialect rather than art direction, which made it easy to spam in reply threads and YouTube comments.

How to Use This Meme
The typical usage is a one-line reply drop in comment sections under hip hop videos, Afrocentric history posts, or any content portraying Black ancient royalty. A common convention is to spell the phrase in all caps with intentional dialect misspellings ('KINGZ', 'SHEIT', 'N SHIET') to signal mockery. Image macro versions often include a photo of a White European historical figure relabeled as African to invert the Black Egyptian argument.
