# Wendigo Wendigo / Wendussy memes grew out of Algonquin folklore about a cannibalistic forest spirit that mimics human voices, which 4chan's /x/ paranormal board started turning into shitposts around 2013. By August 2021, posts had mutated into the wendussy variant, a hiker Yes Chad asking the deer-antlered monster 'who need they wendussy ate,' which spread to TikTok within weeks. ## Origin The wendigo comes from the folklore of the Algonquin people of North America, who described a lost hunter driven to cannibalism during a brutal winter who then transformed into a 15-foot emaciated predator roaming the forest for more flesh[1]. Algonquin communities blamed many unsolved disappearances on wendigo attacks around the turn of the 20th century[1]. Online, the earliest documented wendigo thread on 4chan dates to October 13, 2013, when an anon on /tg/ asked whether wendigos should count as a playable race in tabletop games[3]. By May 2018, /x/ users were layering the creature onto meme templates, with one thread featuring a Pepe wendigo and a Virgin vs. Chad panel for the folkloric monster[2]. - **Platform:** 4chan /x/ (early discussion) / Twitter and TikTok (wendussy viral spread) - **Creator:** Unknown - **Date:** 2013 ## Overview Posts typically show a gaunt, antlered figure stalking snowy woods, often alongside greentext horror stories or Virgin vs. Chad crossovers familiar from 4chan's /x/ paranormal board[2]. The creature's canonical description, skin stretched tight over bone with sunken eyes and a smell of decay, gives artists a specific anatomy for illustrations and shitposts[1]. The wendussy strain flips the horror into bait, casting the monster as a sexual object. A hiker-style Yes Chad meme asking 'who need they wendussy ate' spread off 4chan to Twitter in August 2021[5], and TikTokers soon joined with first-person skits about following strange noises into the forest. This spin works because wendigo lore says the creature lures victims by mimicking human voices, weaponizing an already creepy detail[1]. ## How to Use To build a wendigo post, start with the gaunt, deer-antlered creature stalking a snowy forest, then either go full creepypasta (voice mimicry, lost-hiker lore, SCP-1471 drawings) or pivot to the wendussy variant with a thirst-coded punchline about pursuing the monster. Common conventions include first-person skits set in the woods and the hiker Yes Chad template. ## Frequently Asked Questions ### What is Wendigo?
