# Wet Owl Wet Owl is a reaction image of a soggy, exhausted-looking Barred Eagle owl that spread through TikTok, Tumblr and Reddit between 2021 and 2022. The photo, taken by David Hoffman, picked up a second life in Indonesia in 2023 as Digidaw, becoming the go-to visual shorthand for feeling thoroughly done with life. ## Origin David Hoffman, a documentary photographer and YouTuber, took the specific wet-owl photograph that became the dominant meme image. He explained the context in a YouTube community post on March 29th, 2022, after the picture had already gone viral without his name attached[1]. The subject is a Barred Eagle owl. The earliest documented meme use predates the viral spread by years. A Russian humor site, 2pricolisty, included the image in a Demotivational Poster roundup on October 17th, 2016[2]. The picture circulated quietly for several more years before Western platforms picked it up in 2021, with Tumblr user killue reposting the tired-looking owl on June 16th, 2021 to over 11,000 notes[5]. - **Platform:** Russian demotivator site (source photo) / TikTok and Reddit (viral spread) - **Creator:** Unknown (photo by David Hoffman) - **Date:** 2016 ## Overview The Wet Owl image shows a drenched Barred Eagle owl staring into the camera with heavy, half-lidded eyes and a mouth set in what reads as either grim resignation or quiet contempt. Photographer and YouTuber David Hoffman shot the picture and later shared the backstory on his YouTube community page[1]. The soaked plumage flattens the bird's silhouette into something closer to a wet cat than a majestic raptor, which is most of the joke. As a format, Wet Owl works as a pure reaction image. People pair it with captions about hangovers, exhaustion, Monday mornings and divorce, usually leaning on the bird's resemblance to a tired middle-aged man. One of the earliest meme uses was a Russian demotivational poster compilation from October 2016[2]. On iFunny, user randomshit20 directly compared the owl to a divorced man in an August 2021 post that pulled over 12,400 smiles[3]. The image also became a canvas for photoshops after it hit /r/photoshopbattles, where remixers edited the owl into movie scenes, album covers and historical paintings[4]. ## Frequently Asked Questions ### What is Wet Owl?
