# White Woman Scream GIF A clip of actress Sophia Lillis screaming against a black backdrop in the trailer for Hideo Kojima's game OD became a widely shared reaction GIF after its debut at The Game Awards 2023[1]. Within hours, X users were captioning sped-up versions with absurd scenarios and 'White People When' setups[2]. By mid-December 2023, Christmas-themed edits of the scream were earning tens of thousands of likes each on X[3]. ## Origin On December 7th, 2023, Hideo Kojima posted a trailer for his upcoming game OD during The Game Awards 2023, and the clip reached roughly 162,000 likes on X within four days[1]. KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS also uploaded the trailer to YouTube that day, where it earned around 234,000 views in the same window[6]. About one minute into the trailer, Sophia Lillis stares into the camera against a black background and lets out a sudden scream, with no other visuals on screen. Around 9:00 p.m. EST that evening, X user @CherryHaikus__ posted a screenshot of The Game Awards' Discord stream showing Lillis's face as the preview, with a caption referencing the 'I'm Not Answering This DM' meme that collected over 48,000 likes in four days[4]. Soon after, @PokoChokos uploaded a sped-up GIF of the scream captioned about losing the 'Hello Neighbor' Xbox disc mid-session, which gained roughly 22,000 likes in four days[2]. - **Platform:** X / Twitter (viral spread from The Game Awards 2023 trailer) - **Creator:** Unknown - **Date:** 2023 ## Overview Captions attached to the White Woman Scream GIF typically set up a mundane or absurd scenario that supposedly justifies the overblown shriek, mocking melodramatic reactions to minor inconveniences[2]. A common variation follows the 'White People When' phrasal template, poking fun at perceived white reactions to everyday situations[3]. Because Lillis's face sits isolated against pure black in the source clip, the scream feels unmoored from any specific context, which lets posters attach it to any premise. Two pacing variants circulate on X: a sped-up cut that leans into comic timing, and a slower rendering that stretches the moment for a dread beat[5]. Posts in the second week of December 2023 showed captioners using the slow version for 'getting caught' punchlines and the sped-up version for sudden shocks[2]. The tone across usages stays firmly ironic rather than sincere horror. ## Frequently Asked Questions ### What is White Woman Scream GIF?
