This catchphrase meme comes from a viral 2015 Twitter thread by @_zolarmoon, whose opening line was later adapted into the 2021 A24 film Zola. After the trailer landed in March 2021, Twitter users began captioning images of famously feuding duos with the quote, from Marina and Charli XCX to characters out of The Social Network and Succession.

Overview

Posts follow a two-image template of a famous duo with a known conflict or breakup, captioned with the Zola thread's opening line1. The humor runs on recognition: readers see the two faces, remember the beef, and mentally supply the long suspenseful story the quote promises2.

Early examples drew from pop music, prestige drama, and movies with messy betrayals at their core3. Authors rarely wrote the actual story out. The caption alone did the work, which was the point4.
