# Yung Joc Crying
Yung Joc Crying is a reaction image taken from a May 2023 Instagram clip of the Atlanta rapper weeping bare-chested with hands clasped. The footage sat quietly for months until February 2024, when TikTok creator @segex17 attached it to the phrase 'praying on your downfall,' turning the sob into a format for petty jealousy jokes.
## Origin
On May 13th, 2023, Atlanta rapper Yung Joc posted the source footage to Instagram: a black-and-white reel of himself bare-chested, crying with hands clasped and head tilted up, set to Iniko's reimagining of Future's 'Mask Off'[5]. The clip pulled roughly 887,000 views and 86,000 likes on the account over the following year[1].
The earliest known meme edit went up the same day on TikTok. User @bruthanumero3 overlaid the text 'POV: Pleading for my wife to take me back after cheating for the 64th time' on the footage, scoring around 1,600 plays and 45 likes[3]. That POV format was the template the viral 'praying on your downfall' wave would later borrow.

## Overview
Yung Joc Crying, also called Black Man Praying or the Praying Meme, refers to a black-and-white video of rapper Yung Joc sobbing shirtless with his hands pressed together and eyes toward the ceiling[1]. In its reaction format, the clip or a still from it gets paired with overlay text describing a petty grievance the poster claims to be weeping and praying over, usually a rival's success, a friend's annoying girlfriend or a fictional character slander[2].
Two caption styles dominate the format. POV captions put the viewer inside an embarrassing scenario, such as begging a partner to come back after cheating[3]. The second style, which took the meme mainstream, uses the catchphrase 'praying on your downfall' to joke about wishing bad luck on someone the poster is jealous of or annoyed by[4]. The emotional sincerity of the original clip, scored with Iniko's cover of Future's 'Mask Off,' is the whole joke, since the captions are petty while the face is theatrical grief[1].
## How It Spread
The format sat mostly dormant through late 2023, surfacing as scattered X reaction posts. On December 20th, 2023, user @the16thhokagae used a still of the sobbing rapper as a reply to a debate about Sasuke and Ichigo being 'just anime guys with swords,' captioning it 'Ong. Free my boys from those lies'[6]. On February 2nd, 2024, @Chillvro17 posted the crying face in reply to the Superman Legacy score composer announcement[7].
The breakout came on February 20th, 2024, when TikTok user @segex17 attached the clip to a Girlfriend Lore caption: 'when bro gf be controlling him so bad you start praying on her downfall like this.' The video hit over 4.9 million plays and 970,000 likes within two days[4]. That post locked in the 'praying on your downfall' phrasing and sent creators back to the format with their own targets.
In the weeks that followed, TikTokers ran the template over sports, relationships and fandom beefs, including an edit by @evanisachargersfan[8] and a girlfriend-themed take by @lillucky771[9]. Other creators such as @ayminc[10] and @.quroz[11] added fresh captions through the same window.
## How to Use
Posts typically overlay a short caption on the sobbing clip or still, written in the voice of someone petty, jealous or defeated. A common convention is the phrase 'praying on your downfall' aimed at a specific target, such as a friend's controlling partner or a sports team's star player. Still images of Yung Joc's crying face also work as a one-shot reply on X when something upsetting is announced.
