# Zach Galifianakis Zach Galifianakis is an American stand-up comedian and actor whose awkward public-access interview series Between Two Ferns and viral lip-sync cameos turned him into one of the most quoted comedy figures of the late 2000s[1]. His deadpan delivery and uncomfortable on-camera energy made him a go-to internet reference, from Kanye West's Can't Tell Me Nothing to the 2014 Obama interview that broke Funny or Die[2]. ## Origin Galifianakis started working as a stand-up comic in New York and Los Angeles in the late 1990s and taped an episode of Comedy Central Presents in 2001[4]. His odd-sketch, piano-driven stand-up and recurring guest appearances on Adult Swim programs including Tom Goes to the Mayor and Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! gave him a cult following before mainstream comedy audiences caught up[3]. The meme-friendly phase began on January 4, 2008, when Funny or Die debuted Between Two Ferns with a Michael Cera episode shot in the show's now-signature awkward public-access style[1]. The following year, YouTuber Matt Werner uploaded a clip of Galifianakis lip-syncing Kanye West's 2007 track Can't Tell Me Nothing on June 12, 2009, which spread widely and reached more than 6.6 million views by March 2014[5]. His breakout role in The Hangover arrived the same year, pushing the online persona into mainstream recognition[3]. - **Platform:** Funny or Die / YouTube (viral spread) - **Creator:** Zach Galifianakis - **Date:** 2008 ## Overview The Zach Galifianakis internet footprint is built around a few recurring bits: the straight-faced, mock-hostile interview style of Between Two Ferns, his deadpan lip-sync cameos in music videos, and his doctor and Tairy Greene characters on Adult Swim[3]. The Between Two Ferns setup is deliberately cheap, two chairs between two potted ferns against a black backdrop, which gives every interview the look of a bad local-cable segment[1]. Galifianakis asks guests inappropriate, hostile, or nonsensical questions and lets the silence land. Outside the show, his meme appeal grew from clips of him lip-syncing other people's songs with a blank expression, most notably Kanye West's Can't Tell Me Nothing and Fiona Apple's Not About Love[3]. The internet also kept score of his Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! appearances, where he showed up six times between 2007 and 2010 as the fictional acting coach Tairy Greene[3]. Fan accounts, single-topic Tumblrs, and a parody Twitter account built around his persona kept the circulation going even between film roles[3]. ## How to Use The Between Two Ferns format is the main template people riff on: a plain backdrop, two potted ferns, two chairs, and an interviewer asking escalating hostile or stupid questions while the guest tries to answer. Edits typically splice Galifianakis reaction shots or his flat lip-sync faces into unrelated contexts, and quote cards from the Obama interview still circulate as reaction images[2]. ## Frequently Asked Questions ### What is Zach Galifianakis?
