The meme dates to January 22, 2019, when Redditor EsG_Nitro posted their custom "Alexa, intruder alert" routine to the /r/me_irl subreddit1. The post pulled more than 53,700 upvotes in a single day. A repost to /r/funny picked up another 26,500 upvotes within 24 hours3.

How It Spread

Later on January 22, Redditor jtylerodle mirrored the setup to /r/MemeEconomy, where it climbed past 28,100 upvotes as commenters treated the format like a tradable template2. In the comments, Redditor Wolfey1618 laid out a reusable template that other Alexa owners could plug their own audio into3.

Fandom subreddits picked up the format fast. /r/tf2 ran Team Fortress 2 edits, /r/ShitPostCrusaders swapped in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure audio, and /r/hiphopcirclejerk built their own variants4. On YouTube, several users filmed themselves testing the original routine in their homes, giving the audio-first joke a video-native form on the platform5.

The bit jumped hardware too. Twitter users triggered the same routine on Google Home Mini under tags like #robotuprising, adapting the setup to a rival smart speaker while keeping the punchline intact3.

How to Use This Meme

The template is a two-part setup. First, create an Alexa routine that listens for the phrase "Alexa, intruder alert" and links it to an audio action, typically a song or sound clip3. Second, film or record the sequence so viewers hear both the trigger and the punchline audio back to back. Common picks include boss battle music, anime opening tracks, or fight scene themes tied to a specific fandom4.
