Modern manga took shape during the United States' occupation of Japan after World War II, though earlier Japanese illustrated storytelling goes back to the 18th century. Anime film work began in the early 20th century, when Japanese filmmakers borrowed animation techniques being developed in France, Germany, the U.S. and Russia. The oldest surviving Japanese animation is a two-minute 1917 clip of a samurai testing a new sword, only to lose to his own target.

The industry took its recognizable form in the 1960s under manga artist and animator Osamu Tezuka, whose work on Astro Boy and Kimba the White Lion adapted Disney's cost-cutting animation techniques for Japanese TV production. The first anime series to air in Japan was Otogi Manga Calendar, which ran from 1961 to 19645.

How It Spread

Anime did not break through in the west until the late 1980s and early 1990s, when the cult film Akira picked up a following despite a limited U.S. release. Studio Ghibli's films soon reached western audiences with Disney distribution, and kid-focused shows like Pokémon and Dragon Ball turned anime into mainstream after-school programming through the late 1990s. Adult-oriented anime broke into American TV when Cowboy Bebop began airing on Adult Swim on September 2, 2001, opening the door for later hits including Fullmetal Alchemist, Soul Eater, Sword Art Online, and Attack on Titan5.

The online fandom grew alongside the TV rollout. Fan-subtitled episodes circulated on file-sharing sites in the 2000s before official streaming took over.
